That was my point. It would be absolutely crazy to ship out Rantanen and then go after Jones

Considering Jones’ roots in Denver and his NMC, the Avs would likely only consider this if Jones wanted to come here and Chicago was willing to eat salary to trade him.

I’m not sure how there’s any link or relevancy to paying Rantanen 12-14M dollars vs trying to get a 2nd pairing RD at 7ish M.

The entire point of trading Rantanen was to create more cap to upgrade other positions and create more depth and less top heavy.

Jones would legitimately give the Avs one of the best top 4 D in the league.
Again though, at the correct price point. If Chicago doesn’t want to est cap, or Jones doesn’t even want to be moved, this is all a moot argument

Taking Woods as part of a package for Jones essentially works the same as retention.

For those saying Jones has no value that is just a lazy take and as others have mentioned with significant increases to the cap over the next few years his contract will not be as difficult to work into a roster. He would be a solid 2/3 for most teams.

I don't get why Chicago would have to take Wood AND retain--it's basically 50% retention if they retained ~$2 mil AND took on Wood, not to mention he clogs up the bottom six which the Hawks have plenty of young players who they would rather play over the next 5 years. It's freeing up space at RD just to create the same problem with forwards.

Because the Avs don't have 7.5M in cap space, and neither does any team looking to trade for Jones. Chicago is going to have to take some sort of contract back in a deal and Woods is most easily moved. Chicago can always flip him at some point if they pleased

Taking a plug like Wood saves zero term over Jones and only what? 4 mil if retention is happening as well. Pass.
