Seems a little high on a 3rd rounder, but I agree with the common consensus that Carolina should be very attractive for Darling to land a starting role.

Hans, Bubby....It's not that much given how many picks the Canes have.

I'm cautiously optimistic. This feels a lot like the Khubodin and Lack trades. Promising backup who plays well for a stretch and comes to Carolina to....not do so hot.

I think Darling is the best backup in the NHL but I am not sure he's a starter but I look forward to finding out

I mean, it is, but if he's signed to a contract along the lines of what Talbot got it's an absolute bargain for the Canes if it pays off.

Well they are set then . They have the cap space so darling is getting paid

I guess. I'm not convinced Darling is the solution, but hey, beggars can't be choosers and they don't pay me to make these decisions. Still, doing nothing is not an option.

A good gamble for Carolina in that it's a third round pick in an expected weaker draft year and they do need to try and find a starting goalie to replace Lack and Ward. For the Blackhawks if they didn't think they could afford him or resign him then it's a case of getting max value for a declining in value asset. A 3rd might not seem like much value especially this year's draft class but it's still better then losing him for nothing in July.

Darling is really good. Like really good. I think he has the ability to be a legit starter right now.

I agree with this...He's a big dood with some fast reflexes, I think he's going to shock people. Nothing like Kudobin (nothing against him) but if I'm building a team I want big and fast in net and down the middle.

This trade makes tons of sense and benefits both teams and the player. Pretty much a perfect deal.

If Darling wants to be a starter, he will find no better opportunity than this. Eddie Lack should have been the guy but wasn't up to it. Regardless, Darling likely gets a low-end starter's contract.

Chicago gets very high value on UFA negotiating rights.

Carolina gets a better shot at a starting goalie than they reasonably would have expected from a 3rd round pick. And faster on the development curve. This opportunity is worth more than a 3rd to us.

I think If they can't come to terms with Darling and Vegas signs him in their FA window the Hurricanes won't lose a player either.

Not sure if it's the case for a pending UFA who didnt actually skate for the team though, or if he'd have to had play in a game.

100% agree. I swear chicago would do the same thing. guess not

The problem with trading Crawford and keeping Darling is that ultimately it only makes sense if there is a big enough difference in cap between the two to make taking a risk with Darling worth it. Darling has 5 career playoff games, Crawford has at least three very good playoff campaigns where CHI either won the cup with him playing phenomenally in net, or had a deep run.

My guess is Darling signs a 3 year deal for something in the 3M-4M range. If he ends up getting 4M or even north of 4M, the Blackhawks in that scenario wouldn't be looking at much cap relief and would be downgrading from a more known quantity to a guy who has never been tested deep into the playoffs.

Not to mention, so few teams would be able to take Crawford's 6M cap hit clean without sending something back. So even if they'd get a greater return for Crawford, there's no guarantee they could even find a trade that makes sense for them cap wise.

On paper, it seems like an option. But then when you really think about it, it is the type of scenario where multiple things have to go right for it to really work. Not to mention, Crawford's NTC would even further complicate finding a trade partner as he can only be traded to TEN TEAMS he chooses.

Robbery by the Canes. Darling will make the difference from a club outside to inside the playoffs. Its a jab for all the Nordiques Fan in Quebec city.

Not really. They are so detached from reality that they will probably say this is RF adding talent before the move since players don't always like signing in Canada.

I really think he signs in Carolina and does well for them. Good opportunity to play on a good up and coming team.

Ok, thank you sir for the answer.

Can I get an example during the past playoffs though? Like give me a trade that happened during the playoffs, I can't remember not one single trade during my 20 year stint as an NHL follower. It's been like a gentlemen's agreement that they don't do that no?

Trades can happen any time of the year except for the Holiday Roster Freeze. The only other restrictions are that players traded after the NHL deadline are not eligible to play in the NHL playoffs with their new team.

How is this a good move? A 3rd for a mediocre UFA goalie's rights? This is insane robbery by Hawks

well, maybe the pick is conditional, and if not they could trade his right again. That happened with the Isles once I think.

But I like this aggressive move from Carolina. I think Darling will sign there for sure, and considering they have a great defense there, it will support goalies like him and he'll be impressed by that.

This is a move like how the Oilers got Talbot, or how Sabres got Lehner. Get the guy about to be a starter with all signs pointing up. Pinning hopes on a guy like Bishop carries its own risks, especially with his injury history. And of course he'll be expensive, with probably NMCs and all that. Darling's deal will be reasonable.
