Canes have a boat load of picks, good move. Canes are a strong young group of defensman and the team is on they way up the standings, would be a good spot for Darling.

And if Darling is not interested in Carolina, they can flip his rights to Dallas or the jets/ flames quick.....

Interesting point. Philadelphia did that with Dan Hamhuis’ rights back in 2010.

Seems likely that Carolina will give him both the contract and opportunity he'll be asking for. I'd be very surprised if he walks. Francis isn't going to lowball a pending UFA he just paid a late 3rd for.

No, Ward does not have a NMC, he has a modified NTC. They can expose either one, or both Ward and Lack.

They can expose both, but at this point in his career Ward would likely retire rather than play anywhere besides Carolina (maybe Calgary?).

From the Canes standpoint, it's really not. We have a 1st, three 2nds and three 3rds. This was the last of those three 3rds. It would suck if Darling doesn't sign, but all in all, not really much of a loss.

I'm judging from a historical standpoint, in which case when was the last time someone took a risk by giving up as much as a 3rd for UFA rights? I can't recall.

With that said, I don't think it's a bad move, especially if they think Darling can be their starter for the next few year. Finding a stable starting goalie isn't easy.

The rights to Vesey (basically), Hamhuis and Bouwmeester all returned 3rd round picks.

Here's an expansive list of trades of this ilk --> https://businessofhockey.wordpress....agents-negotiation-rights-is-worth-the-price/

Heck, Buffalo gave up a 3rd (or was it 4th) for Vesey last year, who wasn't even an NHL player. Flyers traded a 1st round pick for Hartnell and Timonen a number of years ago.

Yeah, a 3rd might be a bit high, but with all the picks the Canes have, it's really not a big deal.

If I had to guess, he'll get what Talbot and Schneider (from the 'Nucks) got- 3 years, 12 million.

Agreed. Add Steve Mason to that who signed fir 3 years at 4.1 million.

At 4.1 million, that would put Darling at about the 25th highest paid goalie....so low end starter. That if fair given his age and track record. And if he shows he can be a starter and put up great numbers, he will cash in more on the next contract.

For the Canes, if they can add a legit starter for a 3rd rounder, it's a steal of a deal.

I'm sure they hope they can sign him, but even if they can't they gave up their 7th pick in this coming draft. Really not as big of a deal as some are making it. If we land a legit starter for a 3rd, it's a great deal. If we throw away a 3rd, our 7th pick in this draft, it will suck, but overall not a big deal.

Seems really high for him as a UFA to be. But looks like they might have been competing with another team to acquire him.

By the way has it been so in the past? Could they make trades during the playoffs? I mean the already ready eliminated teams? Or is just this year since the vegas golden boys are coming.

I'd agree if it was our only 3rd round pick, but as stated earlier, the pick we gave up is our 7th pick in this coming draft. Not really a huge deal.

Robbery by the Canes. Darling will make the difference from a club outside to inside the playoffs. Its a jab for all the Nordiques Fan in Quebec city.

As an hawks fan, Im happy to not lose him for nothing but I would like prefer a conditionnal 2nd pick if resign than a late 3rd.

That said, this draft is a lot deeper than people thought. Need some magic beans

Seems a little high on a 3rd rounder, but I agree with the common consensus that Carolina should be very attractive for Darling to land a starting role.

I think it is a solid move. I really like his play, should be interesting to see whether it is Ward or Lack that is gone.

Ok, thank you sir for the answer.

Can I get an example during the past playoffs though? Like give me a trade that happened during the playoffs, I can't remember not one single trade during my 20 year stint as an NHL follower. It's been like a gentlemen's agreement that they don't do that no?

Anyways, I expected Darling to be a starter next season -- just in Vegas. I guess he'll be doing so in Carolina. Not a bad move at all.
