Agreed, but Ladd rejected Chevy’s offer in that example. Chevy dodged a bullet there.

Chevy is incredibly patient. He waits til the last minute to get the best possible deal whether it is a trade or a signing. He's also content to let players develop before throwing them into the fire - longer than most franchises would. Some fans don't like that... but the results are there.
Agreed the Ladd situation worked out well, but it also adds weight to the fact that Chevy doesn't go past his number and overpay.

Not to be that guy, but…
Chevy offered $6 million a year x 6 years and Ladd rejected it to take $5.5 x 7 years in NYI.
Had Ladd signed that would have been a bad overpay by Chevy. NYI regretted that contract very soon after it was signed.

We don’t attract many UFA’s and there is nothing I hate more than July 1st and also trade deadline deals………………..
However, there are always exceptions to the rule and on July 1st 2014 Matthew Perreault signed a 3 year $9 million dollar contract with the Jets that I loved at the time and love more looking back on it. Marty P played for 7 seasons in Winnipeg and I never felt cheated by him as a fan.

Still that was Chevy's number, which wasn't unreasonable given Ladd was the captain and one of our top forwards. There is no way for a GM to see into the future and know if a player will have an early fall off. It seems to me Chevy had some concern about this and didn't give on term like many GMs would have.
Agreed this was a really nice UFA signing by Chevy.

funny you mention this bc just had this discussion in a different thread.
high profile UFA signings often end up like junk. being "Winnipeg" can be argued as an indirect advantage bc said-UFAs will scoff at signing here, such as Ladd, perhaps add Frolik and supposedly Alzner to that list. & i guess Henrique now. If the premise that UFAs and July 1 is the day of overpayment or bad contracts, more times than not, it's better to be lower on the destination list for those players.

Kane trade
1 goal and 0 assists in 14 games. Chevy tried to sign him but alas he went with the oil.

The "bargain trade deadline deals who re-sign with us" are often overlooked
Add Nino, Names, and (to some degree) Miller to Demelo. Those are guys who may have never come here as free agents who got a taste of the org /city and decided to stick around

Chevy is a great GM. My critiques of him are minor as no one is perfect. I think hes one of the top GMs in the league.

Perreault, Frolik, Stempniak even guys like Stapleton and Wellwood... the Jets made a lot of under the radar good impact plays in those early seasons (ofcourse they had their flops too like Setogucci, Wright and Ponikorwski)
Yeah I was all in on signing Ladd back then. Tough to believe how quickly his game fell off.

The PLD trade stands out for me in that in no way did I expect to get 3 roster players for Dubois. 3 roster players who are contributing to the team's success. And there is a prospect to watch still out of that trade.
2nd for me is the Copp trade, which turned around the Jets fortunes. 2017-19 were not the Jets strongest draft years. Samberg is the only regular player to come out of them. But that trade gave the Jets some prospect depth, and Morgan Barron is a useful depth player.
The Stastny trade was his best deadline deal, but as has been pointed out a lot of other trades for middle picks have helped the team and stuck around.
Re-signing so many top players has really shut outsiders up about the feasibility of Winnipeg as a market. There are still players who don't want to play here, that Chevy has taken on, but by and large he's got good returns on them.
The Jets have used the buyout 3 times now, and each time he has used it the team has improved. So that's maybe one of Chevy's hits.

Trading up at the draft to get Kevin He is one move that I'd love to play out. Looking very promising so far - hes an absolute workhorse

And not signing Monahan for 5x5 IMO. I know you can definitely make a case for "that is totlaly fair market value for a player like him" but I was 100% happy when CBJ announced the signing. Nothing against Monahan but I would not want him be a part of our forward core for at least the next 3 or 4 (maybe even all 5) years.
Drafting Helly in the 5th round 130 overall was a ok pick. 
Not being fired for Trotz seems to be a good move so far!
That is so underrated. I think Demelo was a key cog in allowing Jmo to become the elite defenseman he is today.
I still think that would have been a good signing.
Monahan played well for us and addressed a key weakness we still have today.
Sure, the second line is rolling right now but I still think having Namestnikov there isn't ideal.
Monahan doesn't rely on speed to be effective so he's probably a bit more immune to the impacts of age, and his injuries thigh unfortunate don't real seem to be the type of a bandaid player, just an unlucky one.
If I had to narrow it down to his 3 best moves:
3. Kane trade. The trade didn't even end up being a huge win for us in terms of talent. But it set a standard for how we would deal with players that want to go elsewhere. Hang in there, play your ass off, and when the timing is right we will pull the trigger. Stuck to it with Trouba, then with PLD. All situations the agent tried to strong arm Chevy into a corner, and it ended up working out for us about as well as could be expected. Dealing with Kane amicably for years and then pulling the trigger when it made sense was the start of that organizational standard.
2. Double re-signing of Helle and Scheif. When so many, including myself, thought a rebuild was necessary... Chevy quietly worked to get our two franchise guys locked up and built a team with great depth around them. Turned a team that looked to be destined forever to mushy middle to a borderline top 5 team in the regular season x2. Regardless of playoff results in the future, his belief in the process is to be commended.
1. Stastny at the deadline. He recognized how great the team could be an went out and got a well rounded 1C for Ehlers and Laine. Did everything he could to get us a Cup that year.
