As a huge Hawerchuk fan i think he would be head coach right now so having Arniel as our head coach is a close second for me. I think Chevy putting Arniel in place was another great move.
I have to admit I didn't want Arniel as coach but love the fact that it seems like 100% the correct move by Chevy.

What happens if Jets get smoked in 1st round of playoffs again? Does Chevy get fired or will there be a re-tool?

The PLD trade is amazing. The only thing I could compare it to is the Lindros trade from Quebec to Philadelphia. Obviously not quite on the same level as that trade produced that franchises first Stanley Cup, but in the same sort of way by providing the Jets with 3 excellent roster players when played where they are best utilized. If that trade hadn't happened we would probably be seeing the youth movement that so many here wanted to see with Lambert and Chib both likely being on the roster this season. Win Win is what I say.

Ducky was a very, very special human being. I got to meet him through a family connection when he was doing some TV commercials for a a furniture store. For a teenager (knowing what I know now) he was incredibly mature and gracious. He entertained and answered all my ADHD and juvenile questions about what it was like to play in the NHL. I have cried only three times as an adult. One was when my father passed, one was when a tragedy struck my daughter's life, and the last was when I heard on the radio while driving back home that he had passed.

Drafting Helly in the 5th round 130 overall was a ok pick. :naughty::laugh::nod:
Very interesting story in regards to how the Jets drafted Hellebuyck. Technically, 2011 was his draft year, but for some reason, he flew under the radar. I've heard that Rick St.Croix, who was assistant coach for the Ice Caps, was sent to Odessa in early 2012, to do a scouting report on a goalie on the opposing team.

St.Croix noticed Hellebucyk, who was not even on the Jets radar, stood on his head, and made something like 45 saves, easily eclipsing the prospect on the other team. After prodding some who had known Hellebuyck for a couple of years, St.Croix reported to the Jets, stating they had to take a look at Helle, and to forget the other goalie.

The Jets looked into Hellebuuck, and scouted him at more games, and were convinced that he could be a diamond in the rough, and drafted him in the 5th round. One of the few situations where NHL teams overlooked a promising young goalie.

If I had to narrow it down to his 3 best moves:

3. Kane trade. The trade didn't even end up being a huge win for us in terms of talent. But it set a standard for how we would deal with players that want to go elsewhere. Hang in there, play your ass off, and when the timing is right we will pull the trigger. Stuck to it with Trouba, then with PLD. All situations the agent tried to strong arm Chevy into a corner, and it ended up working out for us about as well as could be expected. Dealing with Kane amicably for years and then pulling the trigger when it made sense was the start of that organizational standard.

2. Double re-signing of Helle and Scheif. When so many, including myself, thought a rebuild was necessary... Chevy quietly worked to get our two franchise guys locked up and built a team with great depth around them. Turned a team that looked to be destined forever to mushy middle to a borderline top 5 team in the regular season x2. Regardless of playoff results in the future, his belief in the process is to be commended.
1. Stastny at the deadline. He recognized how great the team could be an went out and got a well rounded 1C for Ehlers and Laine. Did everything he could to get us a Cup that year.

I would say the PLD trade is the best move Chevy ever pulled off. If Vilardi remains healthy for the next three years, it will be the icing on the cake.

Firing Chevy would be foolish.

I still think that the health issues Bowness had, adversely affected him during that series. I am certain that the results could ahve been different if a healthy Arniel was the coach.

I'm not so certain about that. Ducky had been coach of Barrie for nearly a decade, and may have wanted to be close to home, especially when his son was playing on the Colts. Considering his reputation in the OHL and among his players, I could have seen Hawerchuk making the jump 10 years ago to the NHL, but I ahve the feeling he was content in the OHL.

And we still don’t know what we have in Alfons Freij yet.

PLD for

Vilardi (1st line RW)
Iafallo (Swiss army knife)
Kupari (4th line C)
Freij (top 4 potential)

That could turn out to be a franchise defining trade.

Not without misses of course; a few not so good draft picks, trading too many picks away for a draft and develop team, and failure to deal with the locker room issues.

Meanwhile, PLD has only one goal for the red hot Capitals, and is 7th in team scoring. All this for a $8.5 million dollar 1st line C.

Every NHL team has some years where draft picks don't pan out.

From 2011-15, Chevy and the scouting really did their job, picking Scheifele, Lowry, Trouba, Hellebuyck, Copp, Morrissey, Comrie, Poolman, Ehlers, Connor, Roslovic, and Appleton.

Vesalanien was the first real bust, although he had an excellent first year post-draft in Finland. He just could not adapt to the game. We did pick up Samberg, and Kovacevic. 2018, no 1st round pick, but we did pick up Gustafsson. 2019 was Heinola, who may eventually be a reliable blue liner, but has endured injury problems for the past 2 seasons.

Perfetti looks to be a perennial top 6 forward. Lucius may have been great, except for injuries, all but ended his career. We still drafted Chibrikov, who is about to crack the roster. Then in 2022, the Jets struck again, drafting Lambert, McGroarty, and Salomonsson. Chevy also flipped McGroarty (who is struggling with an AHL team), for Yager, who is going to tear it up in juniors this year. In 2024, we were only going to get a very late 1st round pick, and history tells us that late 1st rounders don't usually become stars.

We can't say for sure what kind of dressing room issues the Jets had, as it is hearsay for the most part. Every team seems to have issues in that regard.

The Jets have not suffered from "trading too many picks away." The only time I can say the Jets messed up, was giving Lemieux, their 1st and 4th round picks for Hayes. Otherwise, for the most part (especially with the acquisition of Stastny), the Jets made the right choice.

Overall, considering the Jets have only missed the post-season once, since 2016-17, I would say Chevy is an outstanding GM.

Chevy has had some good and bad honestly and if you weigh them outright then he's definitely done more good than bad.

He hired Noel but also got rid of him. He probably held onto Maurice to long though. He signed Perreault but also Setoguchi. He dodged a bullet with Ladd but moreso because Ladd wasn't interested in resigning here without an overpay I think. He traded Kane for a good haul but only because the players namely Buff, forced his hand. He's drafted really well but also traded up for the likes of Stanley. He handled the Laine/Rosie and PLD situations really well and made us a better team for it. And he also handled the McGroarty situation really well but it remains to be seen who will win that trade in the long run. Some of his deadline acqusitions have been great like Stastny and some have been largely wastes like Hayes, Toffoli and Monahan.

All in all he's done a good job. But there are a lot of situations where he likely could have handled them better. He's a very conservative GM so he's generally going to sit on his hands until he is forced to make a move. Often times that has worked out for him but he has had some gaffs here and there.

The fact Chevy was able to get Pittsburgh's number 1 prospect Yager and he's a center which is always valuable for McGroarty is a great trade. I know we have to wait and see but what i saw of Yager in the pre-season he looks very good.

I think worst case scenario Yager will be a defensively responsible middle 6 center with some offense. Ceiling is a 1B 2-way center who gets 70 - 80 points. I’ll take him over McGroarty easily at this point.

Perreault, Frolik, Stempniak even guys like Stapleton and Wellwood... the Jets made a lot of under the radar good impact plays in those early seasons (ofcourse they had their flops too like Setogucci, Wright and Ponikorwski)

Yeah I was all in on signing Ladd back then. Tough to believe how quickly his game fell off.
Ladd was regressing with the Jets. His game was getting brutal. Shouldn’t have offered him a dime to stay.

This is a great point

I can only imagine how the phone call with Dubas went

Chevy: "Yeah, Yager is a great prospect but McGroarty is ready to contribute right now. I mean, I'd love to have him in my line up this year but he won't sign here. And Yager? I mean he's good... but by the time he's ready to contribute, Sid and Geno will be toast. I mean you still want to win with those guys right now, right? That's why Rutger is YOUR GUY"

Must have been tough for him to keep a straight face lol

Wouldn’t be a hard sell to me. Mcgroaty looked legit I’d never heard of Yager.

If the Jets continue to roll, does Chevy trade picks and prospects for ‘now’ players at the deadline and if so, are there any young players off the table?

I hope he learned his lesson and doesn't mess too much with chemistry.

I'd just be looking at depth options unless injuries force his hands.

If he needs to add a big piece then my only untouchables are Yager, Lambert and Salomonsson. Barlow could be had for the right player.

I don't agree with not offering him a dime.
But I agree there were signs of decay since his spots hernia surgery. He should not have been offered 6x6. It should have been a lot less.

Its hard to evaluate this deal unemotionally.

We generally had very high hopes for McGroarty. And now we have very high hopes for Yager. Meanwhile McG is having trouble getting going making the deal look good for us. But I expect McG to get over the slow start and develop well.

I did think he was ready, or very close. That does not appear to be the case but it is too soon to conclude that we had him overrated. He is just not as ready as some of us thought.

We could use a real skilled power forward. But we also need a top 6 C. I'm seeing the 2 as too nearly equal to pick a winner right now. I prefer Yager because of position.

If we had the choice without all of the hype and butthurt, without having attached to either, just choosing between 2 thinly known draft picks, it would be hard to choose.
