That's correct. He got an assist for basically touching the puck in the neutral zone. Ideally, we would want to see more for points scored.

Stramel strikes me as the kind of player that is in-between realizing what he’ll need “to be” in order to be a regular NHL’er. I would like to see him focusing on 2-3 things and becoming good/great at them. Winning board battles, defensive IQ, and face off expert… he can do it! Don’t let being the “#1 center” make you something you’re not. As much as that can be taken sarcastically… I mean it.
He was much better in the faceoff department in game 2. 3/15 (20%) on Friday. 15/27 (55.6%) on Saturday.

Agreed. My expectations is low so as long as he can develop into a Mark Jankowski/Radek Faksa/Brian Boyle type, centering a disruptive fouth line.
So the thing I'm looking out for this season is how defensively reliable and disruptive on the forecehck he can be while letting Howard be the offensive driver. Because we have JEE/Rossi/Yurov/Heidt/Haight as our offensive future, let Stramel be the key PKer and energy line. Would I prefer we spend our 1st pick on something else? Yes. But it is what it is, unfortunately.
And be the #1 center on a top NCAA team would be nice. They are 2-0 right now vs lower teams. But keep it going and it'll be a good step forward.
Lorenz/Stramel/Bankier or switch in Kumpulainen. That is a nice 4th shutdown line for a playoff conteding team.

And the crazy thing was that there were other, much better choices available, who also had size and played C.
Stramel really scored really well in Combine tests, also.

Had to go back and refresh my memory on those. He did do really well at a few things: 2023 NHL Combine results: Top 10 prospects in every drill
Definitely a big strong kid.
However, a test like "pro agility" saw, for instance, Bradly Nadeau do well. (He subsequently had 46 points in 37 games as a college freshman and turned pro.)

Has anyone done a meaningful analysis about how any of these results actually translate to NHL success? My hunch is that there's a very weak correlation between standing long jump, for example, and NHL success. Some of these just seem like very weird things to even measure, let alone make a decision off of.

We often hear about young hockey players that perform really well at team tryout camps and combines in the summer months. In my opinion players and parents spend far too much time and money trying to attend these things.

And he's a -3? I wouldn't be surprised if he got a few games and then sent back down, but really it doesn't mean that much if he's in the NHL already or not.
Newhook joined the Avalanche before Boldy joined the Wild, and we all saw how that went down for the Avalanche.
With that said, I still think Stramel was a Godawful pick and I don't think he'll amount to much. At this point, he's the next Zach Phillips with the chance of being the next Colton Gillies. It was a bad pick then and worse now.

The opportunity was likely driven by Avs expected returning veterans. In spite of Ritchie’s seeming “not readiness”, kid had some flashes.
Their forward lineup is actually not that great either. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were below the Wild in the standings.

Watching MSU - BC right now. First shift I saw, Stramel had multiple giveaways and an icing but also created a decent chance.
ETA: BC's second goal came right off a Stramel turnover.
Hey, at least he's not likely to face guys like Hagens, Perreault and Leonard his whole career.

If I was projecting him based on what he's done so far, I don't think he's an NHL player.
Still hoping he turns it around, but best I see him being is a 4th line guy. I think his size and strength will entice a lot of GM's and coaches enough that he'll find consistent spots on fourth lines, even if his actual hockey ability isn't necessarily 4th line caliber. Though he needs to learn to be way more aggressive and physical if that's going to happen.

If you squint really hard you can see Nick Roy. If you open your eyes he’s probably more Riley Tufte
Bottom-6 seems pretty crowded with Guerin's long-term deals and the group of LH prospects with size that have progressed well. Maybe he'll let us take 53 in 2027, would take it now over him, but he's got 60+ NCAA games before that decision. Group of players picked behind him will probably be better than FJo. 2027 could be a good year to have an extra pick though should Kaprizov extend.
If Kumpulainen and Heidt end up NHLers and Stramel turns into 53 in 27 the draft was a win.
