They are their own enemies. When you demand every penny off the table and then shit the bed in the playoffs, you open yourself up to criticism. As Bieksa said, take a bit less and you won't have to face as much criticism. Clearly Matty marches to his own drummer.
Heavy lies the crown, at least if you have a conscience, I highly doubt any of these guys care what other’s think of if they’re earning their paycheques, they’re too busy ironing their “Benjamin’s……….”

I know some people derive such satisfaction over-analyzing and over-thinking what's wrong with this 100+ point Leaf team. Imbalance in offence/stars disappear in PO/D-fence is leaky/not enough sandpaper and lord knows what else, the Leafs are a very good team and their PO success will come down to finally getting NHL PO level goaltending. If we get actual great goaltending from Woll and he doesn't let in stinkers that have sunk this team the past 7 years, we'll do great. It's the only change that's required.
The goaltending was very good in several playoffs, reason we lost is because when we get to game 7 we don't compete for some unknown reason. There was one 3 year span when every series came down to one game, we scored a total of 2 goals in those 3 games and that's just not going to get it done.

People complain that we get out-goalied but the thing is, we seem to get out-goalied no matter who the opposing goalie is. IMO there comes a point where have to wonder - maybe it's not the goalies that's the problem and instead, we should be looking at the small handful of forwards taking up half the cap that disappear when the finish line is in sight. JMHO.

I find Bieksa to be an annoying twerp most of the time. Even I have to admit though that what he says often makes sense, and this is one of those times.

They do not and they will not IMO. Rinse and repeat.

I wished we spent more on the defense this off-season, I would rather have another top 4 d-man instead of domi or bretuzzi. We can always add another forward during trade deadline for a lower cost then a d-man. We lost muzzin due to injury but never replaced him with anyone, I hope going forward brad will be more focus on fixing this defense. Scoring our way out hasn't worked for like 7 years, lets actually put together a proper top 5-10 d-core. Which unfortunately will take at least a couple seasons to fix.

I'm not impressed so far this year, the team already looks stale, it will continue to win enough to make the playoffs but that isn't enough for me and most Leaf fans, anymore.

After 8 games TO's big 4 has 19 goals, the rest of the team 10 goals.

How bad is this, Knies has 9 shots, Domi 10 shots, Jarnkrok 12, Klingberg 8 shots on the #1 PP unit, Kampf 4. These players are expected to contribute to the offense but with 1/10th of the season done it looks like the team outside of the top 4 forwards might be capable of 100 goals, I don't think that's a winning combo.

There might be different things that can be done to improve the scoring imbalance, it's this imbalance that has consistently hogtied the Leafs come playoff time, during the regular season having so few do the scoring works because there are so many weak teams, in the playoffs the weaker teams have been weeded out.

What can be done with TO's current lineup to address the imbalance, I think 2 different approaches should be attempted. 1)strengthen the top 6, right now TO has it's top 5 forwards on the top 2 lines, Jarnkrok doesn't deserve to be there if TO was truly expecting the top 2 lines to carry the offense. I would think either Domi or Knies should be on those top 2 lines to replace Jarnkrok. 2)strengthen the 3rd line, Kampf shouldn't be on the top 3 lines, he is where offense goes to die. In this scenario Jarnkrok could be on the top 2 lines, I would think a decent 3rd line could be assembled with Tie, Knies and Bert.

I can remember my being impressed by Gregor when he played for SJ last year, he isn't shouldn't be on any team's top 2 lines but for the sake of balance, he might be a player that could be promoted, so far this year he's been playing 9:46 ATOI and he's only had 1 goal off of 22 shots. Only 3 players on the Leafs have more shots than Gregor, what might he do with quality linemates?

I like the balanced approach, I think Gregor might be an unmined diamond, Knies is being wasted on any line with Kampf as the center.

So I'm thinking:

Gregor/AM/MM
Jarnkrok/JT/WN
Knies/Tie/Bert
Robertson/Kampf/Blandisi

Reaves is entertaining and probably can continue on TO's 4th line getting around 7 mins. per but finding productivity for every line is probably more ideal, Blandisi has been a decent AHL player and he plays with attitude.
It's basically the same team as the past 4 years
Unless the defense gets faster and bigger its gonna be like this till mathews is done here

I’m so happy that we added so much grit with the 3 stooges we signed in free agency.

Reeves plays like 5 mins and it seems like the opposing team always scores

Our new GM made a mess in calgary but gets a pass here because people hate Dubas

Remember he signed Lucic and what have they won in Calgary? Did their stars play bigger? better?

Imagine if we didn’t sign those 3 and used that cap money on a top defenceman? or a 3rd line center?

I don't think anyone is giving him a pass just some time to figure things out. Seems to me, most aren't very happy with him so far.

If they didn't sign those 3, they would need 3 others in their spot which would take up some of that cap money for a top defenseman.

Might be time to spread the wealth and see if it can get some much needed scoring throughout the lineup

Matthews
Marner
Nylander.

The above two make too much to play this mediocre when together.

(I’m a Hawk fan not a Leaf fan but am a hockey fan, so just my opinions)
A) Matthews shouldn’t need Marner on his hip to produce. I’d try 2 grinding tough wingers with him.
B) Tavares does need a top winger, I’d put Marner with him.
C) Domi adjusted his game when paired with Kane and a grinder in a top 6 role. I’d put Nylander here.
Roll 3 lines. All should have energy in April getting a few less minutes.
The 4th line gets primary PK duty but next to no even strength time.
In many instances especially at home lines will be facing the opponents 3rd line. Any of the 3 lines could/should dominate.

The D is a problem as you added a guy worse than Rielly in his own end. I’d consider dressing 7 to limit the time the 2 weak guys play when winning. (Also cuts Gio’s minutes until the playoffs).

Goaltending? LOL keep your fingers crossed. Nobody is giving good ones away. Have to hope Woll can play well for more than this tiny sample size or Samsonov gets better than he’s been over this tiny sample size.

Giving away Lafferty (for Reeves) was dumb. Perfect 4th liner, pk guy replaced by a slow pretty much useless slug.

Just my opinions.

Begging Keefe to grow a spine and break up Matthews and Marner. Or for Matthews and Marner to grow up and decide to stop being attached at the hip and spread themselves out.

Interestingly, we are currently 13th in points, 13th in point%, 13th in goals for, 13th in goals allowed, and 13th in goals differential.

Is the universe trying to tell us something? :sarcasm:
Hire Mats Sundin for an unspecified role within the organization? ;)

You think they play together because the coach is weak and the players are childish?

Matthews and Marner are good enough that they can drive their own line and don’t need each other. If they need each other then we gave the money to the wrong players.

Who knows why. They’ve been struggling as a duo since the Florida series. 9 games into the season so far and outside of 2 games were Auston went God mode they haven’t produced anything.

Hate on him as much as you want, but you can't deny that this guy has awesome hair. All you twenty-somethings and younger will see that as you age the quality of hair becomes an important thing.
You’re right never realized how awesome his hair was. Would love his hair.

Yes. Sadly it’s telling us that we are not a legitimate contender that some here seem to think we are.
