I didn't know they didn't have the internet on the east coast...:sarcasm:

The internet does exist on the East Coast, but that doesn't mean that you always have decent access - which I didn't.

I haven't seen an entire Kings game in a long time. I missed the majority of both Stanley Cup runs. I know most of you won't understand, but I was working in an incredibly sensitive position, but it was necessary on more than a few levels.

I've been working on the East Coast for more than 5 years with almost no access to Kings news. (and I couldn't get my password reset after 5 attempts...)

The Kings are so screwed with the current power structure. I don't know much about the kids due to virtually no coverage of anything Kings here, but there isn't much that impresses me.

Please tell me that what I am reading here isn't true, that - Luc (with no education or background) and Blake (the ultimate Kings future killer) - aren't the future..

I will continue to try to re-establish my persona (aka PSP), but I can't do much if the HF gods don't respond to my requests....

Great to have you back, PSP.

Loved this thread:

Post #7 is pretty funny/sad to read now that the Luc/Blake show is in place.

Welcome back, PSP!

I'm keeping an open mind re. Robitaille and Blake. But it smacks of a good ol' boy club. Relationships are too entrenched throughout the organization for GM candidate evaluation to be objective. If you're serious about being a quality GM, go elsewhere and prove your training has paid off. Compete on a more level playing field.

Side note: I didn't realize Justin Williams scored 24 goals this season. Hmmph. Goals are overrated.

In our system, take away 10 of those. The Caps are the complete opposite style that the Kings play. FYI, he struggle a lot at times, like 2 goals in his first 25 games. We'd be hearing the same complaints about him like we did with Gabby ,Kopitar.

Every time you get upset that Rob Blake is our GM, just remember Joe Sakic is currently a GM in the NHL. Guy has no ****ing idea how to run a team.

At least Blake has more experience having worked behind the scenes here under Lombardi's guidance, and he has Futa on his side.

I think Dave Taylor had less experience when he took over, but he still made quite a few good deals. Now when it came to contract negotiations, free agent signings and player development, h wasn't as great in that department. Though AEG is mostly to blame for the contract stuff.

Following last season, his contract was up and there was some serious debate about keeping him. Sutter is intense and driven. He pushes hard. The players wanted a new voice and many in the organization (both above and below Lombardi on the food chain) felt similarly.

One source (who does not work for L.A., but has connections there) said at one point the decision was made not to bring him back, but Lombardi changed his mind, believing in the man who led them to two Cups. He made the call to keep Sutter. Kelly Hrudey has a great line about people who get criticized for being too loyal: “Boy, what a terrible thing to say about someone, that they are too loyal.”

Lombardi was on an island with this call and when it became apparent during the season it wasn’t going to work, it put Lombardi in a weaker spot, especially since Sutter received a three-year contract in the neighbourhood of $8 million. Luc Robitaille’s stature was growing and ownership decided it was his time. Robitaille and Blake are similar, two L.A. guys who wanted to stay there but the opportunities were staring to come elsewhere.

Not surprised at all.

In hindsight it does seem odd that many had Lombardi as a candidate to move up and someone else sharing responsibility with hockey decisions.

Why would Dean who is still only 59 want to cede any power when it comes to hockey decisions, he is a two-time cup winning GM this decade who is still relatively young.

And why would the Kings after what's happened the last three years want to not only keep him but offer him a promotion?

As odd as it sounds Dean would have seen it as an undeserved demotion and the Kings ownership probably would have seen it as an undeserved promotion.

The bottom line is, it was time to move on from both guys after what has happened the last three years.

Time to get someone behind the bench who is willing to open things up a bit more and time to get someone upstairs that is committed to building through the draft. Those have been the Kings big weaknesses on and off the ice recently.

Futa might have take more responsibility than we think. Did anyone here watch the behind the scenes a few years back of the Leafs when Burke was the GM and Nonnis the assistant GM. Nonnis did most of the work.

I could totally see a situation like this happening now that Futa has officially been titled AGM, and I'm all for it. Blake said himself that he has to heavily lean on guys like Futa, Solomon etc. to help break him in.

Right, it really seems like it's going to be a GM by committee sort of scenario moving forward. Blake will handle all the deals and negotiations while Futa handles the player evaluations and Solomon the cap details. I'm starting to think Lombardi being removed was to cut the cord on his attachment to certain players and his repeated bad decisions.

Most likely, as well as refusing to see that having Sutter behind the bench was leading the team no where. He should have been gone after last year's first round exit to the Sharks. The team was already showing signs that they weren't giving it their all under him, and you can't reverse that bell once its been rung.

I guess this is worth reposting in light of today's news and this misconception that Stevens is no different than Sutter...

FYI, when John Stevens was head coach with the Flyers in 2007-08 and 2008-09, here's how his team's finished in goals for/goals against and special teams.

2007-08 Flyers:
248 Goals For (6th overall)
233 Goals Against (19th overall)
21.8 PP% (2nd overall)
83.3 PK% (10th overall)

2008-09 Flyers:
264 Goals For (6th overall)
238 Goals Against (17th overall)
22.5 PP% (6th overall)
82.9 PK% (6th overall)

It's worth mentioning that those Flyers teams didn't have the best goaltending and defense, but those special teams and goal scoring numbers are encouraging to see if he is who the Kings decide to go with as the new bench boss.

Glad to hear Futa has been promoted.

Hopefully, he and Blake have a good working relationship.

Regarding Futa staying long term, he is still under contract to the Kings, and the Kings have refused to grant access to other organizations to speak with him in the past, so I wouldn't make big assumptions about his long term future with the Kings.

It was Dean vs the Players and the players won. It was more of AEG getting control back from Dean Lombardi and favoring the players that didn't want to play for an intense coach and drives his players hard (as the article above led with in the beginning). It's literally the same story as with Terry Murray. Players had a tantrum and didn't put in the effort for Murray.

Nobody can honestly sit here and say that the players put in the effort this season. They sucked and robbed the fans this season.

Now we got a GM that needs training wheels (Futa etc) and Luc will do AEG's bidding.
