After sleeping on this, I firmly believe that Dean should have been given a longer chance to right the ship. He was clearly learning from his mistakes (not signing Lucic to a huge deal).

I understand that coaches have shelf lives and sometimes need to go. I wish Dean could see past his absurd, though admirable, loyalty. Sutter should not have returned last year. Brown should probably still have the C.

Really don't like where this franchise is headed now.

He offered Lucic a stupid deal long term we are fortunate the Oilers offered an even more stupid deal. Lombardi had not learned anything,

Again once the team one the cup for whatever reason he just let his emotions guide him too much.

With the current administration? Probably not. Especially with Voynov being Russian.

I may or may not be related to someone who dabbles in congressional immigration case work... believe me, athletes get slaps on the wrist, just look at the things MLB players get away with...

He lowballed him like crazy and only offered him a comparable deal to Edmonton's after Lucic already accepted Edmonton's. He just wasn't able to officially sign yet because of the CBA rules.

Yes, but how many have happened under the current administration?

And what's going to guide Luc and Rob? They don't have any experience as decision makers in hockey ops.

Well, he didn't have to be deported in the first place but word was that he was going to be so he self-deported.

The NHL isn't MLB. They didn't even allow him to play in the World Cup this past year, let alone suit up 82 times a year for an NHL team.

Have a hard time believing that one of Luc/Blake's first moves is to bring back a wife beater.

I would think Stevens would probably leave if he doesn't get the Head Coach job? Do assistant coaches have different length contracts then the head coach?

Didn't we hear previously that AEG might not want to pay two coaches? So Sothers and Stevens promotion to head might be the most likely since they still have to pay Sutter.

So... does this mean no more Chris Sutter on the jumbo?

I'm fine with Stevens, Gallant or Stothers taking over. I'm more concerned that someone like Emerson is going to get a shot. I'm not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. He's a player development guy so most of the players are probably familiar with him but you have a lot of guys on this time who have won at the highest level so they need a bonafided NHL head coach.

My only concern with Stevens is that he is a defensive minded coach that while could be a good thing (allowing defensemen to activate on rush, push pace, etc) could be more of the same. Kings need someone that is going to push creativity through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone. It's going to be quite the departure from what they are used to. Whomever comes in has to emphasize on speed and skill which probably will take a year to adjust to. That's why I'm thinking they might go outside the organization. Gallant is in the highest regard (many argue Florida should have not got rid of him) and I'm hoping they give him a chance.

Sounds like NHL analysts think Gallant ends up in Dallas or Vegas.

I've seen the Washington PP coach's name appear in an ESPN article. Know anything about him?

Which they just had a few days ago, and I guess played well enough to finally get rid of him. How about I don't think the players know what they want or need. No more excuses from them though. They did what they wanted to do, now show up.

They better not start whining about it.

Blake just needs to take emotion out of the equation. Yzerman is successful because by all accounts he is very businesslike with little to no emotion involved in his decision.

Either you finish in the top 8 in the west or you don't, finishing 9th or 10th does nothing for a franchise. If they tank so be it, maybe there is a guy like McDavid or Matthew's who put their team back in the playoffs within a year or 2 of being drafted.

This happening has me way too excited for the off-season. For better or worse, it'll be interesting.

I actually mentioned him in the first page of the new coach thread. Here's what I wrote there

I know it's probably going to be the same-old same-old if a new coach is brought in, but one guy I'd like to see considered is Todd Rierden. He has a reputation for developing young D-men when he was in the AHL, but at the same time he's spent his time in the Pittsburgh and Washington orgs, who definitely emphasize more creative, up-tempo play.

I think a mixture of that defensive mindset along with a more offensive style is exactly what the Kings need. He is also coaching under Trotz, who I have incredible respect for as a coach.

Nice post. Wouldn't be against it. Would require quite a few moves on the roster though to get him the personnel he needs to play that game.

I think the choice for new coach should be obvious...he's got experience as a player, a coach(in the olympics I might add), and has been staying in LA for a while. He even has some experience with Kopitar which should help.

It's a tough tough day. I for one would very much have rather had Dean in charge of the rebuild/reworked Kings then Blake. He radiates intelligence and frankly Blake doesn't.

this gonna be good when it goes live? it just replays the same 13 seconds or whatever

I'm gonna watch it, too, but it's probably gonna be a bunch of slap ass'ing and grand standing. I hope someone there asks the hard questions, but I doubt it.

And I think 2, Major.

Edit -- It's 1pm pacific time.
