So here is the thing, it’s not the NFL. And while the Americanization of European sport is happening, it’s completely unnecessary here. NFL (regular season) schedule is not a good comparison because it’s not seeded. UCL is seeded. What’s the point of finishing in Pot 1 if a Pot 4 team is going to get an easier schedule? It makes no sense. For example, Aston Villa got the easiest fixtures compared to the three English teams that finished in higher pots than them. That’s simply should not be happening in a seeded draw. Combining that with the extra games and an extra round for all but eight of the advancing teams, this is not an improvement

Yeah it could certainly be tweaked for next year; for example maybe if you finish Pot 1 you get an extra Pot 4 opponent and one less Pot 2 opponent; but the whole thing is such a cash grab that UEFA/club owners/etc would probably not want to sacrifice and extra high profile game for an easier game. That’s why this is bad. And the fact that the change was unnecessary in the first place

I agree with you, but to just hit further on that NFL comparison, the weaker teams do get a more favorable schedule next season.

This is going waay off-topic, but basically:

• Six games against divisional opponents — two games per team, one at home and one on the road.
• Four games against teams from a division within its conference — two games at home and two on the road.
• Four games against teams from a division in the other conference— two games at home and two on the road.
• Two games against teams from the two remaining divisions in its own conference — one game at home and one on the road. Matchups are based on division ranking from the previous season.
• The 17th game is an additional game against a non-conference opponent from a division that the team is not scheduled to play. Matchups are based on division ranking from the previous season.
  
  
  So, it's not just the luck in which other divisons you face (which is massive enough, facing NFC North with 4 winning teams, or AFC South with Houston and 3 tomato can teams), but also the opponents you face in the rest of the schedule are based on where you placed in the division last season - if you placed 4th, you get the 4th placed team from that division.
  
  It's why, for example, Chicago has a historically soft schedule, and they might be 7-2 in 3 weeks time, yet still anyone will expect the top teams to roll over them.

It’s a post from two years ago. I’m just glad they were able to punch them in the face yesterday. mueller in the verge of tears yesterday on the bench is probably the best moment I’ve had as a Barca fan in 5 years. f*** those guys.
