High reward low risk. He was a replacement level 6/7D last year but if he can step up this year or next year its a good deal. He was widely considered one of the best prospects in the world just a year ago.

wasn't everyone on the Flames bad last year? Hard for a rookie to do well when the entire team struggled.
Most were bad, some were ok, some were good. Mangiapane, Hanifin and Tanev were excellent. Backlund, Gaudreau, Lucic and Lindholm were ok. The others struggled.

Just a bit disheartening seeing Valimaki go from dominating in the Finnish league to looking overmatched on the bottom pairing in the NHL

He was fine in a #6 role and showed flashes of decent offensive potential, but I think the grind got to him. Certainly didn’t think Rasmus Andersson did all that much either and he gets 4.5 million. Lots of players need to show progression next yr.

Is his knee injury still holding him back? I know Flames fans and others were very optimistic about his ability. Hopefully he, like a number of young players from last season, can have a normal training camp and season to acclimate. I think a bunch of young players suffered last year with minimal practice and covid protocols. My guess is that we have not seen what he's actually capable of yet.

I agree with part of your post. He showed flashes of offensive potential and Andersson wasn't that much better. But I don't think he was fine in a #6 role. He was overmatched in a #6 role. Andersson was overmatched in a top 4 role.

Offensively he looked good. Very good at getting the puck through traffic and great skater.

Made some bad decisions though which isn't going to work with Sutter

ah the guy that was supposed to be better than Suzuki as per flames fans. I wonder where these guys are

If these were made in 2020-21 ya awful. If they were made in 2018-19 it wasn’t that unreasonable.

Still didn’t see them personally.

Flames fans are being ridiculously critical of Valimaki's season. He struggled at times with his defensive decision making (primarily from being to aggressive in the offensive and neutral zone)and as a result made some glaring errors that stuck out like a sore thumb and resulted in direct goals against. However, he was also a bi product of absolutely terrible goaltending, generally poor puck luck, and having to play with a defensive partner who was also trying to acclimatize to the north American game. Nesterov was definitively worse and he was the veteran on that pairing.

Everyone is also seemingly overlooking the fact that he unfortunately missed nearly two full seasons of development post draft, and was playing in his rookie season as a result. Despite all this his analytics were extremely strong, and he certainly wasn't overmatched as everyone in here is indicating.

CF - 54.1%
CFRel - +2.2%
FF% - 51.8%
SF% - 50.8%
SCF% - 52.25%
HDCF% - 53.88%
xG% - 53.54%

Jusso is going to be one hell of a defensemen in this league, and a slower start than anticipated doesn't change that. He had overly hefty expectations placed on him due to his dominance in the Liiga to start the year.

Seems about fair for both sides. Him and Nesterov might have been the worst pairing in the NHL last year, so he’s got no negotiating power, and isn’t worth what he’s getting. But if he puts it together, Calgary’s looking good, and they got a second year to hedge their bet on him over performing it

How many people have even bothered to compare the two?

I like how you make it seem like it's common haha
a shit ton. It was very common two years ago and for many flames fans to defend those statements

yeah only towards 2018-19/20 before Suzukis rookie season. Some posters even tried to make me look ridiculous for stating Suzuki is a by far better prospect and would never trade him 1v1 for Valimaki
