If Colorado is looking for a shake up it wont happen by trading their best player and future of their team for a clear downgrade.

No chance Colorado makes this trade.

Sorry Avs fans, but Monahan is not a downgrade from MacKinnon. More goals and more points and plays a much better 2 way game than MacKinnon. They are the same calibre. One of more two-way while the other is offensive. I'd gladly take the Toews clone over MacKinnon.

Monahan is terrible defensively, lmao at Toews clone. Can't believe some people still believe that.

The only people who believe that are out of touch Flames fans. I'd also like to see how many points would Toews 2.0 have, playing without Johnny Hockey, and how many would Nate rack up playing with him.

LOL Toews clone. Monahan is really bad defensively. Mackinnon is actually a fair bit better in his own end. I realize that he was drafted as a great two way junior player but everybody in the hockey world that aren't flames fans (and even a lot of Flames fans admit this) realizes that that defensive part of his game didn't transition to the NHL yet.

Also Monahan has 4 more points in 20 more games. Don't argue points without taking games played into consideration.

Monahan is a indeed downgrade on Mackinnon.

Monahan plays like Vanek, although he is better in a lot of areas he doesn't have the amazing tipping ability that Vanek has. Monahan also isn't bad defensively he is just average, right place right time kinda guy.

Well this flames fan sure doesn't agree with you. I'd trade Monahan for Mackinnon any day of the week.

Yeah whoever thinks Monahan is the same Caliber as Mackinnon probably thinks Jack Eichel is the same Caliber as Connor Mcdavid. Hahaha
Sean Mona is not a two way player what so ever. There is a reason why the coach has been starting him in the offensive zone for faceoffs and not the D zone.

Toews clone  It would be flattering to Monahan to say he's even average defensively right now.

If people are going to assume all Monahan will ever be is what he is, guess I will assume this of Mackinnon (who I watched in Halifax his whole time and can believe)

Stupid, sideways move. We will wait for Monahan to work out his issues. You keep your guy.

*rolls eyes at Monahan being elite defensively*
*rolls eyes at Monahan being trash defensively*

Generally youll find the truth in the middle of all the extremist crap. He's average. Everyone can get over it now.

MacKinnon's better all around but the difference between him and Monahan isn't Andersson, more like Culkin.

Agreed with all of this.

One thing I might add is that Monahan seems to have MacKinnon's number in the faceoff dot. For whatever reason when the two are in a faceoff against each other Mony pulls that power-backhand draw and Mac has no answer. The more you know.

It's somewhere in the middle, but he's still below average defensively. He sometimes makes good defensive plays but often isn't involved enough defensively, especially for a centre. Compound that with the fact that he doesn't play as conservatively as some centres (e.g. oldschool Backlund) and doesn't have the skating ability to catch up when a rush occurs most of the time. I don't see how anyone can claim Monahan is even average defensively when he spends 80% of his time in the o-zone within 10 feet of the net and can't skate well enough to catch up to half the league if the puck leaves the zone. He also historically has played surprisingly high in the defensive zone (under Hartley, granted).

Facts:

- Monahan is not an elite 2-way centreman (ie. Toews clone).

- Monahan is not a terrible 2-way centreman.

The truth is that he's an average player in his own end, he's an above average playmaker (minus this last stretch of games), and he's a great finisher. His best comparable is Eric Staal.

Yeah he had a 52% GF 5 on 5 last year while being the focus of the other teams gameplan defensively. How many 21 year old Centers can say that? Not many.

Eric Staal is way stronger on the puck and a much better skater. I think the Vanek comparison is decent from a skills perspective, but you'll note that those aren't necessarily great skills for a center.

I think he'd be a much better and more effective player on the wing.

In any case, Monahan is definitely a downgrade on Mackinnon, who'd likely score 70-75+ points alongside Gaudreau.

Maybe Monahan + Stajan + 2017 1st for Mackinnon and Grigorenko?

The Flames need to be patient with Sean. He's inconsistent but he's a big time player when he's on his game. Nate Mackinnon isn't a true #1C IMO. Highly skilled, but 3 years down the road, when the Flames should be competitive, I think you want Monahan down the middle.

Him and Johnny are a dynamic pairing. They are playing brutal but splitting them up now would be disastrous. Sean and Johnny compliment each other so well.

The rest of the roster is improving. Once Johnny, Sean, TJ, and Mark return to form this team will be very good. Patience is the key with this roster.
