I haven't heard what all the changes are but the 4 downs would be the natural first step. Young fans aren't all that interested in watching when there is so much punting.

That is a hell of an assumption.

TFC is more relevant to the average Torontonian. Hell, some people resent it because they view them as an impediment to getting an NFL team.

Huh?

Seriously, while I know people tend to dress fairly professional in the city, which somewhat limits sports attire. When is the last time anyone here has seen someone rocking Argos stuff? Hell, I think I've seen more Rough Riders stuff in the past decade.

I wear Argos gear and I saw someone wearing an Argos shirt in Freshco the other day. Funnily enough, last year I also saw a woman wearing a Marlies t-shirt in that same store.

Down this way (Windsor), CFL is pretty much non-existant. I haven't watched a CFL game in a few years, and that's despite my team (Winnipeg) winning the Grey Cup back to * to back. Why Winnipeg...... I don't know really. That is my Dad's team, he was born in Winnipeg, grew up in Kingston/Ottawa, settled in Windsor. He is about the only CFL fan I know.

I have a feeling the CFL has a very sparse fan base, and honestly I am not sure how big it is. You seldom even see CFL merchandise in stores like SportChek, Lids, etc around here.

Seems hard to have a quality, popular professional league with so few teams, but it's survived for over 100 years so I could be way off base on that.

I've never been to a CFL game, but have been to 2 NFL games (1 was Monday Night Football), and it was enjoyable, but football is probably #5 on my favourite sports to watch list, and even NFL, I usually only check the scores here and there.

Also......very rare, if ever do you see anyone walking around with CFL team merch. I suspect that being in Windsor, we have a very unique sport fan base here, being right on the border to an NFL city, that also has NHL, MLB, and NBA teams. All are terrible but still.......

4 downs, without substantial other changes, would be a mistake IMO.

With all of the receivers in forward motion, the bigger field, huge endzones, and the 12th man, you'd have games that regularly end up with likely somewhere around 100 points scored per game between the two teams.

I agree there's too much punting, and that is of course because the 3 downs... A team can go for a 5 yard run, have 1 good defensive play against them, or simply drop a pass, and you're punting. Maybe 4 downs is the answer, but a lot would need to be done to decrease the average yards per successful play.

The CFL falls victim to a few factors...

One being that in many of it's markets, it is far from the most "important" team. Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto all share their market with NHL teams. Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto share with MLS teams, and in the case of Toronto, Baseball & Basketball as well. Only in Saskatchewan is the CFL the biggest game in town. It's hard to create a culture when you're not the first thing that sports fans talk about.

Second, is the schedule. Take Toronto's home schedule for example, they played:
Thursday at 7:30pm
Monday at 7:30pm
Saturday at 7:00pm
Sunday at 5:00pm
Saturday at 7:00pm
Friday at 7:30pm
Saturday at 4:00pm
Saturday at 2:00pm

One of the reasons that the NFL is so successful, is because of the religion they've built up around Sundays -- and the all-day festivity that goes with it. CFL has nothing like that.

I've been to a few Grey Cups and I can say it will never be embraced by the people of Toronto and Vancouver.

CFL is in some deep doo doo right now. The lack of offensive plays, overall pace of the game (which use to be a lot faster), and lack of big plays is clearly having a negative affect on the League.

While I enjoy both North American versions of football, I use to enjoy the CFL a lot more, but the NFL has become the more enjoyable League (at least for me) over the last few years.

You think the NFL has more big plays than the CFL ?
that’s ridiculous

Windsor is isolated from everything else and is across the river from an NFL team so it is unique. Out west, the CFL is huge.

With our overly anal provincial liquor laws, tailgating will never happen here like it does in the US so building that all day festivity will be impossible. We would need mature liquor laws before that could happen.

we had 14K tailgating before the Grey Cup - in the same area.

albeit it was an area not normally open, owned by the factories, but they opened up 5 consecutive parking lots, and it was a free-for-all

of course that was not normal, and not common, but it happened (and it is possible).

Can you imagine the League proposing a 10 year collective bargaining deal without an increase to the salary cap.

what a league....sure tries the patience of the fanbase.

Sounds like the CFL is in some trouble. I think the past few years really took a dent in the league. They relay alot on walkup fans. They should probably try and coordinate a realtionship of some sort with one of those other non NFL leagues.

And what experience is that? It was a completely baseless statement.

The oppertunity for a punt return is a hell of a lot more exciting than every damn kick going thru the endzone in the NFL or the lame ass fair catch.

The last few years ?
Yeah, I think the NFL has not only surpassed the CFL in not only big play, but also total offensive plays per game.
The CFL needed to switch back to the old clock rules, the current clock rules, along with all the subs between plays is having a negative affect.
