He was a linebacker when he played and his first few years coaching were on the defensive side of the ball until taking on Special Teams, and Special Teams is more aligned with the defensive side than offensive side, so I'd suspect he's pretty in tune with the defensive aspects of the game, but he'd likely need a good OC.
As for experience putting a staff together, could go either way. Most of his career has been working with Hufnagel so he's at least seen how others do it well and he's also likely seen how holding on to almost an entire coaching staff too long like the Stamps had over the last 5 seasons under Dickinson can also backfire as you need to inject some new blood and new ideas from time to time.
Obviously there's a risk, like there always is with a first time HC, but there's little denying that this is a guy that was developed in a program that is exactly what Ed wants to promote here. He's likely the only one of the rookie HC options out there that I think is really worth a shot.
