I think we all understand that we're still building for the future and the team is not going to be great this year regardless of what we do.

But we do have one resource this year (forward ice time) that I'd like us to spend on some talent. There are young guys that I mentioned in my other post (Maccelli, Quinn, etc...) that could be had on the cheap that we can give opportunity to. They might also be good scorers. I am very tired of playing only 5 scoring line forwards and 7 depth forwards. It both sucks to watch and it is a waste of opportunity as far as the ice time goes.

I'm also not fully buying that Mateychuk needs to stay in the AHL. He strikes me as the exact sort of player who will be undaunted by any challenges he faces in the NHL. He would be an immediate upgrade for us and I think we're needlessly not using him. Yes I understand the value of the AHL, I've been an advocate of that approach for many of our players, I just have a harder time seeing it with Mateychuk.
I think getting as many habits as possible for a top 2 defenseman is never a bad thing. Although if Fabbro gets injured, it would be nice to get him called up. We'll see.

assuming we're gonna see daemon hunt here in a little bit, and i'm excited to see him get some games in. obviously mateychuk would be the more exciting option but i think the plan is to let him cook until they know he can step into a second pair, 20+ minute a night type role here.

I would be surprised if Mateychuk is not already second pair caliber (or better).

Anyways, excited to see Daemon Hunt, if he gets the call-up.

Looks like Malatesta is going to the Jackets according to AHL site.

I’m for bringing Hunt up to see what he can do. That may be more imprortant than seeing Mateychuk as there’s great confidence already that Denton can step into a second pair role. (I have read some who aren’t convinced he’s a shoo-in, but I’m convinced he is and more importantly I think Waddell is).

What’s the price for Quinn? Brindley? Brindley +?

Less than Brindley.

Quinn is snakebit this year and I think he's no longer waiver exempt, they might have to trade him just to get something. He's also not a super complete player - I'm not saying he's a one trick pony, I think he has full scoring tools, but he's not a 200 ft sparkplug like Brindley.

I just looked it up and Quinn apparently just scored 2 goals vs the Leafs, so that will buy him some time there. But if he goes back into a drought and they get a couple forwards back from injury, they'll start scratching him again and he should be available, and cheap.

What do we think about getting Kakko from NYR? A pretty decent young defensive forward for our middle six. I guess we can start with Min 1st and add to it
I hesitate to go after someone whose value will be unjustifably inflated by former draft selection position.

See? Exactly like I said. Value was totally unjustifiably deflated. :sarcasm:

For a price like that, I don't think I'd have minded picking him up, but whatever.

Yeah, this would’ve been like Harris+the same picks. Borgen has been pretty bad this year. I’d obviously have done that, but doubt NYR would trade him in division at that price.

Also, while I'm here (and because I already posted this in HFPreds thus clearly demonstrating my lack of priorities):

Dante Fabbro may miss some games, the Columbus Blue Jackets said on Wednesday, but the veteran defenseman’s injuries aren’t as extensive — or long-term — as feared when he was injured in Tuesday’s loss at Tampa Bay.

“Everything has checked out so far,” Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell told The Athletic. “It looks like it’s more of a charley horse than a knee injury. His leg was pretty swollen, but it looks like we dodged a bullet there.”
Basically what we'd seen earlier from Portzline w/r/t that tweet from a few hours ago, but this time with a Waddell quote for extra authenticity.

I'd totally have done that and then put in a waiver claim for Del Gaizo (Poach More Preds), even tho he's not much of anything special.

Heck, maybe tomorrow afternoon we'll find out that that's what Seattle did.

What do we have that they would want? I am assuming they want someone that can go back and forth between AHL and NHL without waivers. Hence suggesting Brindley. Malatesta? Dumais isn’t healthy. Pyyhtia? I don’t know that they want picks. Harris?

Yeah that was a GTFO trade after calling out the organization today. Considering the return the rangers probably didn’t want to see him in the East regardless

Even still, didn't a charley horse keep Werenski out of the lineup 2-3 weeks last year?

Buffalo in general has too many forward prospects to break in right now and too many middling offense only types. So a waiver exempt guy that offers the grit like Malatesta might be interesting to them. It's hard to say, they're also full of small prospects and Malatesta might not do it for them. I don't think Dumais or Pyyhtia have much appeal to teams.

Personally I think Brindley and LDBB are worth too much but after them I have our prospect pool dropping off significantly. Perhaps Elick or Malatesta might have enough appeal to them, or maybe we're just not good trade partners.
