Line Combos: CBJ Roster Discussion/Line Combos/Injury Report

I seem to remember seeing something about Gudbranson being expected back soon? Or maybe that was a speculated timeline a while ago.

Either way I don't think we can use Desharnais with Gudbranson in the lineup.

From today's Athletic article in which each beat writer picked a need for his team and James Mirtle offered up a fair payment:

Target: First-round pick — Aaron Portzline

Cost: A healthy Boone Jenner, C (CBJ)* — Mirtle
(* 8-team no-trade list)

Reality: There’s only one way a Blue Jackets general manager should ever consider trading Jenner: if Jenner wants to be traded. Jenner is not only the captain but the heart and soul of a franchise that is finally headed in the right direction and is not far from being consistently competitive. He’s also really grown in recent seasons in his ability to lead. Ivan Provorov for a first-rounder? Sure. Not Jenner. — Portzline

Now why Porty thinks our biggest need is a first I don't know but I think his rebuttal to Mirtle is spot on.

Who do you think our #1 target should be and what would you give up? Try to be realistic and specific ( knowing full well this will soon turn into a debate about OT strategy :sarcasm:)

I think we need to have a better update than “Progressing” for a guy that missed 10 games already. What the heck happened to him ?

• Winger Yegor Chinakhov hasn’t played since Nov. 27 vs. Montreal, missing the last nine games with a lower-body injury. Today vs. Carolina will be game No. 10. The club has not offered a timeline on Chinakhov’s return, but his agent, Shumi Babaev, told The Athletic that Chinakhov hopes to resume skating next week.

Wait wait wait…didn’t they say “upper body injury” originally??

Honestly though, I hate that we don’t know what part of his body was actually injured and for him to miss this amount of time.

While they can be frustrating, I still think this team is back on track after last year and what happened to Johnny.

I just want them to keep playing somewhat meaningful hockey for as long as possible. Build that competitive attitude.

What do we think about getting Kakko from NYR? A pretty decent young defensive forward for our middle six. I guess we can start with Min 1st and add to it

I hesitate to go after someone whose value will be unjustifably inflated by former draft selection position.

A late 1st with a small plus seems reasonable to offer for a young defensive forward like Kakko. He doesn't have much offense but has consistently gotten good defensive results. The Rangers have done well with him on the ice. The draft status is kind of ancient history at this point.

Personally I think we do need more forwards like that. We especially currently need guys who can step in to the top six, and that is something I'm not sure if Kakko can do, I look more to guys like Maccelli as good pickups that might blossom in the ice time we can offer this year. But long term we have a need for strong Kakko types too.

If we are going to make a trade for a forward it needs to be a major piece that really elevates our scoring depth. If the rumors from Friedman are true and either Elias Pettersson or Dylan Cozens are actually available I would be making calls right now. Sillinger+ MN 1st+ Proverov for Elias? More?

Jenner-Pettersson-KJ
Chinakov-Monahan-Marchenko
Vronk-Fantilli-Olivier

It's hard to tell what Pettersson is worth with his inconsistent play and that $11.6m contract.

I'm definitely thinking about it though.

I want no part of the expected price for Petterson, and frankly I suspect most of what makes him attractive is his name. That there's any talk at all of moving him from a team like Vancouver is a massive red flag, and while that was the sort of risk we had to take back in the day when we had little or nothing I'd like to think we're in a better position now.

The expected price? Do we have any idea what the real price is (genuine question)?

Would you make a small offer for him?

I think his trade value might be minimal. It's a high risk move.

I'd want him retained, and with retention he's a low-risk high value asset.

That and I'd rather take such risks with my other team...

I think his inconsistency has a lot to do with the knee injury but he has been a point per game pace (although with significant peaks and valleys) since November. That seems to me like the sort of injury that takes a lot more time to get back to 100% than the Canucks or Pettersson will say. I would bet you don't see him fully return to form until next year. Personally, I feel like the fact he performed so well in the playoffs and adds experience to a young group with a lot of developing centers could really help the forward corps. That being said 11.6 is a huge cap hit even for "just" a point per game player and I get why we might not want to pull the trigger on both the cap and assets costs.
