A late 1st with a small plus seems reasonable to offer for a young defensive forward like Kakko. He doesn't have much offense but has consistently gotten good defensive results. The Rangers have done well with him on the ice. The draft status is kind of ancient history at this point.

Personally I think we do need more forwards like that. We especially currently need guys who can step in to the top six, and that is something I'm not sure if Kakko can do, I look more to guys like Maccelli as good pickups that might blossom in the ice time we can offer this year. But long term we have a need for strong Kakko types too.
I doubt we need Maccelli but Kakko would be good. Also he has offense potential. But NYR would want too much for him.

I think the Jackets should target Panarin. He would fit right into the hole left by Gaudreau. We have the cap space to fit him without retention.

He liked Columbus well enough but dreamt of playing in New York. He has done that. Plus, he would fit in very well with the other Russians on the team.

Not sure he waives for any team, he’s kinda set in NY

What do we think about getting Kakko from NYR? A pretty decent young defensive forward for our middle six. I guess we can start with Min 1st and add to it
there are plenty of guys out there who are worth a 1st round pick. kaapo kakko isn't one of them imo. i think kakko is a better player overall but let's look at jesse puljujarvi is a comp.

kakko's best season so far was the 21-22 season (age 21), when he put up 18-22-40 in 82 GP (0.49 p/gp). that fell off hard last year (0.31 p/gp) and has rebounded this year (0.47 p/gp). at this stage, he's about a half-point per game guy on the wing, and he's just 23 years old.

puljujarvi spent his age-21 season overseas, but his age-22 season was better (0.45 p/gp) and his age-23 season was better than anything kakko's done (0.55 p/gp). he then really struggled the following season and got traded for basically nothing.

similar traits (big two-way wingers), similar flaws in their game, similar draft stock, similar production… they're good comps and given what pulju fetched in a trade there's no way kakko would cost a first rounder.

realistically it's probably something like a 3rd + a depth piece. i don't mind him as a reclamation candidate, though.

I think the price is high. Our 1st (top 4 protected), Minnesota’s 1st, and a Russian. Might need to add a Luca to get it done.
for pettersson? i'd do this in a heartbeat. him and kj together would be insane, and it would allow them to shelter fantilli a bit until he's fully ready and be patient with lindstrom.

realistically i don't think the jackets make for great trading partners in a pettersson deal because i imagine the canucks would want to add guys who can help right now. if you're the canucks, a package with cozens and byram makes a lot more sense than one built around chinakhov and some picks.

the CBJ version of a "compete now" package is probably something like a healthy jenner + one of the russian forwards + an extended provorov + futures on top of that. i don't think that's as appealing to them as something built around younger budding stars like cozens and byram.

that said, i'd be all over dylan cozens. i could see the sabres moving him for futures (similar to what the jackets just did with jiricek) and we have plenty of those now.

That is true. Obviously getting him to waive for Columbus is rather unlikely unless New York tells him they are completely rebuilding and he decides he would not mind returning.

Also the price will be an issue. I'm sure New York would insist on one of our few unmoveable pieces at least initially.

I like Jet and I hate to say this but "no worse than the other two" is damning with faint praise.
That's the key I was trying to allude to in my earlier post. He had some great saves at times but he still came out of the last 2 games with a sv% under .900.

Maybe, just maybe the team in front of them is just not good and it doesn't matter that much who is in goal for this team right now.

Well, considering that he only got three games and played good before being sent back, to me, means he wasn't even getting a shot a backup. He handled himself well, looked fundementally better than the other two, just didn't get the results.

I think he is the better choice at backup currently, not sure if he can rise enough to a number one, but he works hard and you can't rule out him being a starter someday, whether here or somewhere else.

I do agree defense needs to be better, but not just from the defensemen.

I think most fans should chill about what to do about this year's team. Let the guys develop their weaknesses. I don't see them as a playoff team and if they somehow got in I see them out in 4. Let Waddell and Evason have a full season to evaluate everyone (except for guys like Provorov who could bring assets at the TDL).Try to add UFAs that can help long term this summer. There is a nice nucleus being built here. Patience is the key.

so there’s rumors going around on twitter that I keep seeing Jet has been sent back to cleveland?

i’m confused.

“There were strange tremors on Friday when Greaves and forward Mikael Pyyhtiä ended up on the transaction wire and, later, on the Cleveland roster. But those “moves” were made to give the Blue Jackets flexibility in the coming weeks.

The NHL holiday roster freeze begins Thursday and runs through Dec. 28. It prevents NHL players from being traded, waived or demoted to the minor leagues during that time, but there are exceptions.

One of the exceptions is for players who were recalled after Dec. 11. They can be sent to the minors until midnight on Dec. 23. Greaves’ recall last week was on Dec. 11, so he needed to be recalled at least a day later in order to rejoin the Monsters through Dec. 23.”

Indeed. The team D needs a serious fix.
Still McCarthy coaching it right? (serious question). I haven't been a fan of the D coach since Shaw left. Something seems to be a miss because I don't feel like we have zero talent back there and I know D is part of a 5 man system in front of the GK and also know we aren't getting many pick me up, huge saves in net, but still feels like the D is underperforming as a group on the whole

I think we all understand that we're still building for the future and the team is not going to be great this year regardless of what we do.

But we do have one resource this year (forward ice time) that I'd like us to spend on some talent. There are young guys that I mentioned in my other post (Maccelli, Quinn, etc...) that could be had on the cheap that we can give opportunity to. They might also be good scorers. I am very tired of playing only 5 scoring line forwards and 7 depth forwards. It both sucks to watch and it is a waste of opportunity as far as the ice time goes.

I'm also not fully buying that Mateychuk needs to stay in the AHL. He strikes me as the exact sort of player who will be undaunted by any challenges he faces in the NHL. He would be an immediate upgrade for us and I think we're needlessly not using him. Yes I understand the value of the AHL, I've been an advocate of that approach for many of our players, I just have a harder time seeing it with Mateychuk.
