A late 1st with a small plus seems reasonable to offer for a young defensive forward like Kakko. He doesn't have much offense but has consistently gotten good defensive results. The Rangers have done well with him on the ice. The draft status is kind of ancient history at this point.

Personally I think we do need more forwards like that. We especially currently need guys who can step in to the top six, and that is something I'm not sure if Kakko can do, I look more to guys like Maccelli as good pickups that might blossom in the ice time we can offer this year. But long term we have a need for strong Kakko types too.
I doubt we need Maccelli but Kakko would be good. Also he has offense potential. But NYR would want too much for him.

I think the Jackets should target Panarin. He would fit right into the hole left by Gaudreau. We have the cap space to fit him without retention.

He liked Columbus well enough but dreamt of playing in New York. He has done that. Plus, he would fit in very well with the other Russians on the team.

Not sure he waives for any team, he’s kinda set in NY

What do we think about getting Kakko from NYR? A pretty decent young defensive forward for our middle six. I guess we can start with Min 1st and add to it
there are plenty of guys out there who are worth a 1st round pick. kaapo kakko isn't one of them imo. i think kakko is a better player overall but let's look at jesse puljujarvi is a comp.

kakko's best season so far was the 21-22 season (age 21), when he put up 18-22-40 in 82 GP (0.49 p/gp). that fell off hard last year (0.31 p/gp) and has rebounded this year (0.47 p/gp). at this stage, he's about a half-point per game guy on the wing, and he's just 23 years old.

puljujarvi spent his age-21 season overseas, but his age-22 season was better (0.45 p/gp) and his age-23 season was better than anything kakko's done (0.55 p/gp). he then really struggled the following season and got traded for basically nothing.

similar traits (big two-way wingers), similar flaws in their game, similar draft stock, similar production… they're good comps and given what pulju fetched in a trade there's no way kakko would cost a first rounder.

realistically it's probably something like a 3rd + a depth piece. i don't mind him as a reclamation candidate, though.

I think the price is high. Our 1st (top 4 protected), Minnesota’s 1st, and a Russian. Might need to add a Luca to get it done.
for pettersson? i'd do this in a heartbeat. him and kj together would be insane, and it would allow them to shelter fantilli a bit until he's fully ready and be patient with lindstrom.

realistically i don't think the jackets make for great trading partners in a pettersson deal because i imagine the canucks would want to add guys who can help right now. if you're the canucks, a package with cozens and byram makes a lot more sense than one built around chinakhov and some picks.

the CBJ version of a "compete now" package is probably something like a healthy jenner + one of the russian forwards + an extended provorov + futures on top of that. i don't think that's as appealing to them as something built around younger budding stars like cozens and byram.

that said, i'd be all over dylan cozens. i could see the sabres moving him for futures (similar to what the jackets just did with jiricek) and we have plenty of those now.

That is true. Obviously getting him to waive for Columbus is rather unlikely unless New York tells him they are completely rebuilding and he decides he would not mind returning.

Also the price will be an issue. I'm sure New York would insist on one of our few unmoveable pieces at least initially.
