I guess as a Columbus fan we are supposed to not appreciate anything and find the bad in everything. How dare you show nice hands when the D is playing like that. Just like that Tarasenko scoring on the Rangers weak D, shouldn't even have counted

Really not trying to be a Debbie Downer. But if you're talking about this:

I'm not really sure I see these 2 plays as even close to being equal... I'm not poo-pooing Stenlund. Just not impressed by that particular play.

Remember Markus Nutivaara? The 21 year old defenseman GMJK drafted in the 7th round who only had 2 points in 35 games with Karpat in the Liiga?

Through 38 games he has 4 goals + 15 assists with a +9 and only 12 penalty minutes. Very impressed with his development this season.

Nutivaara had another goal tonight. Interesting prospect, and could be a great steal. Also made his national team debut this fall.

He seems to play with unlimited confidence, is a good passer and a good skater. The big question mark is if he can adapt to faster game and smaller rink in NA. I think David Rundblad would be a good comparison, but that doesn't really sound like a compliment these days.

One thing is sure; he'll never co-exist with Torts.

One of the Kärpät best players every night. It's just not the points, his hockey IQ is very high and he knows when to attack and when to defend. His goal was great example about his IQ. He does many things right on the ice.

Is there a particular reason?

I don't think they see hockey the same way at all. Just completely different mentality.

Playing for Tortorella wouldn't really allow Nutivaara to play like he's used to and to use his strengths. He'd have to completely revamp his game just to make the team.

What is that exactly? He's been giving his defensemen who have offensive talents and skating abilities the green light to attack and try to make plays. All he has to do is play hard, smart and most importantly earn his trust and he'd be fine IMO.

OK, then it probably isn't an issue. And after all, Nutivaara is still couple years away from the show even in best case scenario.

It's still an interesting transition and a point.

Nutivaara is currently playing under the most sophisticated playbook in the world in Lauri Marjamäki's Kärpät. Control is the keyword in that book. While Tortorella's playbook seems to be more from the vertical coniferous forests I would still give the head coach time to form his own coaching team during the season break and then finally install what is his.

Tortorella's U.S.A. and Marjamäki's Finland meet in the World Cup. Who will Nutivaara pledge his allegiance for?

::

One part about Marjamäki, Kärpät and Nutivaara is of course that Marjamäki has brought culture of proper nutrition/fitness/athleticism in the every day of being a Kärppä. Joonas Donskoi (now of San Jose Sharks) for example blossomed in this culture. So Kärpät could reasonably be said to be a top-15 ice hockey organization in the world and to get a player from there these days..

Olivier LeBlanc was named first star of the week in the Q this week.

2GP 3G 2A +4 with 2 GWG

He's such a steady defenseman, definitely the kind of value you want to get out of a 7th rounder, I expect he'll have a long pro career and may even play some games for you guys at the NHL level.

+/- isn't an ideal stat but LeBlanc is +19 on an Eagles squad which has some big trouble keeping pucks out of the net, he next closest defenseman on the team is +4.

Defnitely promising considering he was also invited to Team Canada this year. Didnt make the team, but impressive from a 7th round pick.

Where does everyone feel our prospect pool is within the NHL... top 10-15?

I'd say 8ish. There's at least a couple guys with good upside at every position. By good upside, I mean top six F, top four D, #1G. I think there's only a few other teams who have can match that depth. I don't think the Jackets have as many game-breakers though.

Gavrikov is so reliable, but boring to watch. Last game he was 2nd on the Loko in ice-time with 18:50, just 20 seconds less than another youngster 21 years old Koledov. They use 7 defensemen in he KHL, so that's pretty common when no one plays 20 minutes a game. Another boring shutout win for the Loko, 1:0. I guess that's a good characteristic for their defensive play.
Dave King was coaching them last season BTW and gets a lot of credit for Gavrikov's development.

^^What do you think his chanes of making the CBJ in a few years are? I saw the highlight package and what they had to say about him after he was drafted and then did some research and other then Werenski and Bittner he was my favorite pick last year and I have extreamly high hopes for him even more so the Carlson. I think I remember seeing something about him being the former captain of the russian jr team and he was named the best Dman in the tourny even though he never scored a goal (it might have been not even registered a point i dont remember the stat). But it went a long way to show that his D was just that good that he didnt need to score for him to be very effective. I want him to be our #4 and pair with Werinski in the future. Imagine if he really hits his max potential and can be that shutdown guy with a big body and have the top 4 of jones-Murray and him with Werenski. Makes me excited for our future.

He's got one more year after this one on his contract and then might come over. The most close comparison for him is Anton Volchenkov with a bigger frame, but he's not that physical yet. He strikes me as a really smart player who knows what to do at every moment, which is a rare thing for a 20 years old. He was a captain for the Loko junior teams since he was a kid.
Gavrikov wants to play in the NHL, 2 years ago he attended the draft ceremony in Philly and was really disappointed no one selected him. Last year he knew that Columbus is gonna pick him and he follows the Jackets now.
He's made a huge step forward since then and if he continues at that pace he might be ready for the NHL pretty soon. Pairing the 2 best defensemen of the last two WJC, 2 captains of the USA and Russia teams, could be a good idea, their games complement one another very well.

I've always liked looking at players 24 and under, for example, because teams don't get rated high if they have players who are so good they make the NHL quicker than the normal good prospect.

We've got 10 players under 24 in the line-up tonight. Including the whole 1st line and 1st defensive pair.

Nutivaara's game-deciding goal progresses Kärpät once again into the Champions Hockey League final.
