Wasn't going to include Oleksiak and Honka because they were more recent and as defensemen we know they often take longer to develop (part of what makes Werenski so special). And yes...not every #14 has worked out...for sure.

When I looked at the list, thought it a bit coincidental that Dallas took two d-men both at #14 just a coulee of years apart.

FWIW, I would consider Nutivaara a homerun. How many 7th round picks ever see the NHL? Let alone play a big role a year after they're drafted?

Hell, the Sabres picked a player who didn't even exist in the last round of the '74 draft (just highlighting how little value those late round picks have... also I know there were more rounds back then).

I admittedly tend to class Nuti as more of a "free agent signing" rather than a "late draft pick", myself (since from what I understand, that's what the plan normally would have been except for some sort of unusual circumstance wherein we wanted to make absolutely sure we had his rights), so I have a hard time thinking of him as a drafting success. (The question is one of seeing development potential versus scouting an active pro).

Either way, it's good work by Kekalainen and his staff.

The play reveals everything with Nutivaara. A professional league champion, worlds colliding, utilizing the Eurasian hockey pyramid, a geezer to end all geezers.

I look at him as a draft pick since we drafted him.

SI interviewed 6 prospects and Abramov was one of them... l liked this comment

"I have seen at the NHL training camp how professional players are and how hard they work and it's impressive. I have changed my attitude. I continue to work hard and I began to concentrate more on the little details which can make me a better player. I am always in touch with the Blue Jackets. They help me and give some advice to help become a NHL player."

Abramov has his 100th point on the season.

EDIT: Make that 101. That puts him in a tie for the league lead, at least for the moment. The player with whom he is tied has played two more games and is older.

Have we ever had a prospect who led his Juniors league in scoring?

OB was 1st in the W in 2014-2015
PLD was 3rd in the Q last season
Brule was 3rd in the W in 2004-2005
OB was 3rd in the W in 2013-2014
Matt Calvert was 4th in W in 2009-2010
Jake was 4th in the Q in 2007-2008
Vitalii was 5th in the Q last season
Brass was 6th in the Q in 2005-2006
Joey was 7th in the W in 2010-2011
Picard was 8th in the Q in 2004-2005
Rachel was 8th in the O in 2012-2013
Nasher was 26th in his best season in the O in 2001-2002 (I am sure he mighta broken some records had he stayed one more year)

Might be time for Abramov to get his own thread , as mentioned he passed the 100th point mark today , he was a first round talent that fell simply because he's a smaller player . Kinda crazy, since there have been more and more smaller players being dominant in the newer NHL , Kane , Atkinson .

You are correct. I went back to my Hockey News Draft Preview Issue. They had him rated at about 27-28.

Certainly the size thing is the first thing mentioned in scouting reviews. The other thing he had against him was the bias against selecting Russian players. It seemingly swings back and forth. When Ovie and Malkin entered the league, selecting Russians seemed in vogue. Then the whole thing with Radulov and Kovulchuk and a couple other things, removed the vogue and put the bias against.

It probably has to do with the fortunes of the KHL, or the transfer payments due because of where things are with the IIHF, but I remember watching the draft and being shocked that he dropped all the way to the 3rd round.

Kole Sherwood is soooooo much better this season than he was last year. He's made tremendous strides over the past 2 years. Just got his 82nd point tonight.
Besides the huge uptick in points, there are two stats of his that jump out at me: First, 28 of his 33 goals have been at even strength, and second, he leads his team with 282 shots on goal (even though he has played fewer games than the teammate with the next highest total).
