Me and my son loosing our championship game yesterday. Link to a local podcast I did with the wclt

C’mon boys I’m doing everything to get someone’s attention and talking about Columbus area hockey youth or adult. Ask me a question, tell me about your kids hockey team, or call me a arsehole I don’t care. I just want to help pump up our local hockey community

Registration for next session is open. Support local independent hockey leagues! The corporate chiller leagues have enough people!

I dunno, I always found that "everybody knows your name" bit kind of creepy. If I walk into a place for the very first time and everyone turns around and goes "Hi, Joanne!", I think I'd turn around and run the hell away. :scared: :D

not to mention the "they're always glad you came" part. Why would you want to go to a bar that's exactly like HFB?

We had about 6 or 7 people from Columbus I didn’t know yesterday at our boot camp.

I didn’t get to make my way around to everyone, but I can only assume at least 1 of those people came from here. So I have no choice but to keep pushing the boot camp in the lounge.

Next event is January 8th

I’m gonna put this here instead of the “other sports” thread because despite that I saw it on ESPN2 I’m not convinced because I’m old and curmudgeonly.

But Monday night I’m at a bar with a buddy and the TV is showing something called World Chase Tag? And despite that I would like to be all grumpy about it we watched it more than the NFL game on the screen next to it, despite that I am a big NFL fan and had my FFL semifinal in the balance.

Did anyone know this was a thing?

I saw some sort of chase competition on tv once. Wasn’t nearly as cool as Running Man.

So. I just want you all to know ive finished speaking to all these random ass Columbus people at our preseason drop in tonight..... and none of them are you guys. Just people who have heard good things about our small town local hockey league and live on the east side of columbus. Our D league seems to sit in between the chiller E and D league skill wise and people like the game play.

You all will be pleased to know i am taking this as encouragment to continue posting my hockey wares here seeking to give back to HFboards... a place that set me on my hockey journey 20 years ago.... Since ive not even recruited 1 person from here i cant stop now!

So, with that in mind... if there is any Hf'er out there that has ever wanted to start playing hockey and would like to start in a friendly. welcoming environment... please hit me up. League play starts next week or we have our Newark Generals Adult Boot Camps that are great at getting new skaters on the ice, moving around and doing hockey things

the best way to start playing hockey... is to start playing hockey

I tried to learn to skate a while back and signed up for a class at the Chiller. Was mortified to find that it was me and about 10 7- and 8-year olds, all of whom laughed at me. But I had the last laugh in the second session when the meanest boy of all the mean boys had to be carried off the ice crying because he fell down and hurt his ankle. I cried very little whenever I fell and never had to be carried off in the arms of my teacher. Suck it Timmy!

All of the above is 100% true. I finished out the learn to skate program and tried for several months thereafter to get better, but I could never figure out how to do a hockey stop. Or any kind of non-board-assisted stop.

This may not be remotely helpful but I finally got over the hockey stop hurdle by skating directly at the boards and trying. For whatever reason that got me putting my skates in the right direction and I literally had a 'hard stop' to prevent me from just sort of half-assing it. The mechanics feel wrong, the boards coming up on me made me do it. I also learned how to skate as an adult.

Did you used to rollerblade when you were younger? I find rollerbladers have trouble accepting the physics of skating vs blading.

Hockey stops are definitely a “you have to trust yourself” moment of movement. Sometimes the best thing to happen is to push yourself past your line so that you do fall. Falling is the best way to learn honestly. That way you start to calibrate in on finding your edges and balancing point. Also you learn to trust that your equipment will protect you.

If you want to give it another try… id recommend hitting up some open public skates. But wear your gloves, helmet, or anything else. Once you get past not running into a stationary wall move onto not hitting kids flying around…. Then you are ready

Gonna bump with an update.

D and C league play started this week in newark. Currently Newarks D league has 57 skaters spread over 4 teams. C has 56 skaters over 4 teams.

The d league grew about 12 skaters this offseason (about 10 from Columbus). We are very close to expanding to 5 teams at the D level. We have a couple back up goalies we just need more skaters. c league is pretty solid at 4 teams. You need heavier benches for higher level skilled play so those numbers are perfect.

The consensus from our new players that have been playing in the chiller leagues is that the NIHA adult leagues fit nicely in between skill levels. So our D league play fits somewhere between a E and D. Our C league is in between D and C. So we fit nicely for people who find E games to easy and D games to up tempo. Or D to slow but C too much.

To quote an unnamed new teammate of mine in the locker room “it was super competitive but I didn’t feel like anyone was trying to hurt me”

Mid city magic tied the black knights of Columbus 3 to 3. I played defense. I had a very nice goal coming down the left wall on a turnover I jumped on, with a screen sniped far post. I also had a nice break out assist. Straight up ice, just a touch of sauce. (Yes this entire post was so I could brag about my goal and assist). Moes original bbq Pittman got up on the draft-eze Dodgers 8-2. Moes had a guy named darrin orubda get a hat trick.
C league plays tonight. We’ve got the Granville Golfland hole seekers playing Roosters. Then the Mid city mooseheads playing Nitrous.

Adult boot camps fire back up Sunday @5. Can you skate and ever thought about playing hockey? Got $20 and a hour on Sunday afternoon? Need help with gear? Let me know.

I’ve got a youth hockey tournament also!

I’m booked on 10u house but looking to fill spots in all other divisions? Got a 8u select team and looking for an end of year tourney?
