Maybe not 2OV for Caufield, but I think any team would need to consider it for any pick past Fant/Carl/Mich. Cauf has a good chance to have multiple 50 goal seasons...and all the guys past the aforementioned have warts just like any other draft.

A Zegra/Caufield reunion would be something special though.

This is a standard “pile” for an elite asset. It’s like you can’t put a bunch of AA players together and add up to a MLB team.

Would Caufield + a non 5th overall pick be enough for Anaheim to move the 2OA this draft? Assumption is there is an 8x8 sign & trade in place.

FWIW I would have a hard time trading Caufield from Montreal's perspective only because he's the first guy who looks like he could pot 50 in multiple decades, but I also think Fantilli will be a better player long term.

BONUS: If you think this is a trade that could get done - do you think Chicago would ever entertain Bedard for 2+5? Why/why not?

(I don't endorse these trades, just curious what other people think)

Plot twist...
Ducks select Carlsson. Lol

Habs are probably getting the second best player in this draft anyway (Michkov says hi) no need to trade our future 40+ goal scorer. And that's being conservative.

If I’m Anaheim I’d take Caufield and 5th for 2 but that’s about it.

I’d absolutely take that tho. Michkov, Carlson and Smith are great prospects

It’s hilarious to suggest this would even be considered without #5 as a part of the deal.

Even if it was, I’d take Fantilli over 5 and caufield.
I think there’s some overrating of Fantilli happening in this thread so far. Obviously the OP proposal wouldn’t happen, but Anaheim would be nuts not to take Caufield+Smith if he’s available at 5. That said, Montreal would never do that.

Yeah Right...

Fantili is good, but he isnt 40g scoring winger + Michkov/Smith/Carlson good.

Habs never do that deal. Even if Fantili becomes a 100pts C, why would MTL trade a 80-90pts upside C + 40-50 goal upside winger?

Habs never do that deal because Anaheim never entertains it lol.

Because there’s a much better chance of Fantilli hitting that ceiling than Smith.

And Carlsson isn’t going to be available at 5.

Fantilli is the total package. Big, fast skilled. Everything you look for in a franchise C.

Caufield is an undersized and already injury prone winger. 40 goal scorer? Sure. (Although he hasn’t yet)

Not nearly as valuable as an elite 1C.

Bedard and Michkov are way better than the rest of the top 5. Fantilli/Smith/Carlsson are basically in the same tier.

Trading down from #2 to #5 if you don't plan to pick Michkov and obtaining frickin Caufield in the process is a no brainer, I dunno what people are smoking around here. The difference between Smith, Carlsson and Fantilli is certainly not Caufield.

Michkov? Maybe.

For the Ducks to even remotely consider this it would take something like Caufield + one of Suzuki or Dach + 5th overall. +maybe something else Then they may start to consider it. And i said "may"

But at that point the Habs are probably better off to just keep 5th and roll the dice with whoever of the big 5 drop there. Fantilli is a great prospect but gutting the roster for him may not be the best long term move to make

Do you?

How is Fantilli a lot better at the same age?
Fantilli is more productive than Jack Eichel was in his freshman season. He had the best freshman season a draft eligible player has ever had. Dahlin couldn't defend in the Swedish league at the same age.

Dahlin's draft class was one of the weakest we've ever seen. 3rd OA in 2018 isn't even a top 20 pick in this draft.
