Anyone surprised he was not signed first ? He's either out of shape more or he's getting moved
Mittelstadt has no leverage. There's no urgency to sign him. He's a 10.(2c) player. All they have to do is tender him a QO.
What is a 10.2(c) player?

A player becomes a free agent when their contract expires on July 1 after the last League Year of their contract. A player who does not meet the UFA requirements or the Group 2 RFA requirements displayed in the table above, and has been issued a qualifying offer, is designated a 10.2(c) player. The player is only eligible to negotiate and sign a contract with the club that holds their signing rights. They are ineligible to negotiate a contract (offer sheet) with any other club. They are also ineligible for arbitration. If the player does not receive a qualifying offer by June 25th at 5:00pm ET, they immediately become a UFA.

The difference between Alex Nylander and Mitts is that Mitts was straight up rushed. While he did want to go pro after his first year, the Sabres should have known better to keep him there for another year. Nylander has 84 games in the NHL and Mitts played 114 games and got drafted a year after Nylander. Mitts wasn't rounded enough to play in the NHL, and should have had another year in college and at least a full year in the AHL before being brought up.

I don't think he's taking it as easy as he was, but I think he's happier about his own play and where he is than he was previously. The AHL coach got him to play in all situations, taking PK draws, blocking shots, be much more responsible on both ends of the ice, with and without the puck and also let him make up for his mistakes. That is how you're supposed to coach and kid and the AHL is what he's needed. He didn't need that 77 game season last year in the NHL, as he should of spent that to learn how to be better for the NHL, than to just expect to just be good anyways.

He's still raw, but he seems to be young, motivated and getting the right kind of practice, play and training that he definitely needed. Give it 2 or 3 years. Even if he isn't topping 80 or 90 points a season, he'll be a good 60 to 70 point player that can work both ends of the ice.

I agree. People are jumping the gun on Mitts without really considering his age or the situation he was put in by a bad GM and even worse coach. The talent that can't be coached into him his there. He just needs to learn to play the pro game. I think he can do that in the AHL and eventually under Krueger with the big club. No reason to panic dump him just because he was brought into a bad environment by a young GM that didn't understand how to develop draft picks.

How hard can it be to help a top prospect with diet and conditioning? Considering what these players make it must have a huge ROI just to secure that the players are fit.

A stronger Mittelstadt that gets to play 1C in Rochester would easily become a decent NHL player.

It can be hard for someone that was always one of the best without ever having to work on things other than what he likes ie hand eye coordination, shooting etc to develop a grinder mindset and turn into s gym rat. Hopefully he had a come to Jesus moment and realized how much that effort transformed MacKinnon and Briere. The team provides the tools but it's the man that needs to supply the motivation

His value has to be at an all-time low. At this point we're better off keeping than dumping him for a pick or as a throw in.
I keep thinking about the world juniors tournament he had and hoping he will someday "get it".

I doubt it...if that was on the table he should take it and run.

There's probably a 1 or 2 year deal at his minimum QO on the table...that would likely be something he'd likely take time to mull over.

Mitts would be betting on himself. I don't think taking a cheap bridge deal like TnT did is a no-brainer. Especially for a 1st rounder with the talent that Mitts has.

Given what he's shown so far and the current economic climate of things I don't think that's a smart bet.

He'd be lucky to sign for the same deal as Tage.

We'll see I guess...

His QO will be a little over a $1M. If he is the Sabres 3C this season and has a good year, his next deal very easily could be something that gets him over $2M per.

This is a make it or break it offseason for Mittelstadt. It's one thing to be a raw, immature prospect at age 18 and 19. It's not ideal but I get it - some kids take a little longer to build that pro mentality.

But he's 21 and will be 22 before we hit the ice for training camp. At this point immature turns into lazy and unmotivated. He needs to show that he's putting in the necessary work to be a professional athlete.

Adams and the staff need to be very tuned in to what Mitts has been up to this off-season. If he's working his ass off and showing that it has clicked for him, keep him and let him fight for a spot. If it's more of the same, we need to cut bait before his value falls even more through the floor. He's not going to get a king's ransom, but there will be teams out there that will see the potential and buy in.

I do wonder... what if there isn't an AHL season?

We'll have to see his progress. I don't know how he gets to the level he needs to be in without professional level experience. It wasn't just that he wasn't in NHL shape, it's that the game was moving too fast for him. He needs that AHL level experience. He should plan for an entire season in Rochester.
