He's not cut out for professional sports. At least not to be a serious threat of being any good.
Hes deciding whether he wants to be a weak kid or understanding and doing the work he must do to compete w men maybe not as gifted who have put in the work and the commitment.. If he gets this.. We will be sorry if we trade him.. He has way more grit than nylander... Talent and gifts are not enough to skate by at the highest level.. It is uncertain what f n age he will be when he is disgusted wasting what he could be and fully commit ...

How’d has he looked lately. I’m essentially done watching Buffalo this year and need to start tuning into Amerks games. I’m located in Alaska, any advice on how to tune in to watch?

I agree with you. I am just sick of waiting. Be a man, Casey.

He’s played well. Taylor is using him in all situations. He’s getting PK, PP and end of game ice time (close out games or to rally if down). I believe he has 16pts in has last 18gms as well.

Botts fumbles this one all the way around. I don’t think his value is there to deal him and he won’t be ready to be an NHLer to start next season.

can he still go to Rochester without waivers next year? If not, they have flushed an 8thOA pick down the drain.

According to CF he is waivers exempt for another season.

Considering he's an RFA next season (a 10.2 RFA), he won't be able to go up and down without hitting waivers. I could see him staying down in the AHL for most of next season and be brought back up for late season play of the 20-21 season.

But you know, that article gives me some good hope that he'll be able to turn it around. They also have the ability to wait on him a while longer and I think it would benefit the Sabres in the long run.

Mitts has 2 more seasons or 46 more NHL games to be played (whichever comes first) before he becomes waiver eligible.

Waivers won't likely be an issue next season if they want to send him down and call him up from time to time.

He doesn't have two more seasons remaining. The two seasons he has remaining include the 2019-20 season, which is still on-going.
As an aside, that games played threshold should also be considered subject to change. If this season isn't finished and/or next season ends up shortened, then various games played thresholds could end up becoming prorated.

Is there any hope left?
For Casey to be the elite 2C many were projecting two years ago? Very little.

For Casey to be a serviceable middle six offensive player like say, Derek Plante or even Derek Roy? Sure, why not? Roys D3 season wasn’t much different than what Casey did this year and he didn’t arrive in the NHL until his D5 year, when he put up 46 points.

Don’t judge him by Botterill’s misreading of where he was in his development.

To Be an NHL player, or to live up to his 8th Overall pick status?

I think there's hope he can be an NHL player, IMO, a middle 6 player which isn't the end of the world, but there's a lot he needs to improve upon to reach that status.

For his draft pick status, considering the history of 8th round picks for forwards, he could be that sort of player that would be at that level of player. He's not going to be a William Nylander/Courtier level of player, but he COULD be alright of a guy.

With that said, do I think we cost ourselves some potential by rushing his development, absolutely.

What was done to this kid is exhibit A as to why hiring a complete clueless dunce who has no concept or understanding how to properly develope players is complete death to an organization. It's a million times worse when you aren't one of the glamour teams and you basically have to count on development to even be competitive.

Roy and Plante were miles ahead of Mitts defensively because they played in disciplined systems. Mittelstadt needs to improve defensively or he'll never be an NHL center.

Gopher fans knew he went a year too early from college. He could have dominated a whole year of college (not just the last month) and came out NHL ready in 19-20. Now we're looking at 21-22. Leaving school one year early cost him two years.

It certainly should have been a decision made in his first year to send him down. This organization...:huh::eek:

Cost HIM 2 years of development, and burned unnecessary years off an unnecessary at the time ELC.

.
It crazy how spotty even 8th overall picks are, when everyone assumes a top-10 should be a lock

Mittelstadt is far from a finished product. I do think he's approaching a make or break point though. He needs to have a strong offseason and a strong AHL season next year. I'm saying it now, even with 4 open spots in our middle six, barring him just dominating camp and bullying his way to a roster spot, he should be in the AHL next year. He needs professional structure, big responsibilities, and real pressure on him to be an elite AHL forward. Think about where he was in his NCAA development when he pulled him out. He was a secondary player for them. He probably hasn't been a leader in a locker room since the 2018 WJCs, and probably since High school before that.

There was a recent Skype interview of him posted here by the Amerks in house reporter. Skype isn't flattering to anybody but he still looks so pudgy and soft. Some of that is genetics but I think it has more to do with his commitment to physical conditioning/strengthening and diet. Sam Reinhart came back after his rookie season looking noticeably different, his neck was much thicker, shoulders bigger, less baby fat.

I think Mittelstadt has just had it too easy. That decision to stay in high school because he wanted to win a championship with his buddies really wasn't a good sign. Whenever he's interviewed about his struggles he always answers 'i'm not worried, it always has come around for me, i just have to be patient' - I think that is a very honest answer, he believes if he just keeps playing hockey everything will fall in place. NHL players are driven, they get stronger and faster, they hire nutritionists/chefs, hire skills tutors - he doesn't seem to get that part of it yet, it should be obvious to him by now what he has to do to be an NHL player.

He strikes me as a kid who if he doesn't succeed in the NHL it won't bother him, he'll be back in upper middle class Eden Prairie and with his connections and fame he'll get into some business and live a good life.

He's similar to Alex Nylander, just don't think either of them completely gets it.
