A handful of ok games overrides the entirety of Peters' career. While I appreciate that he's been in net for some recent wins, he's not even close to Dobby and Ward, and will not fetch much of anything in a trade.

Serious question, at what point do we have to make the evaluation that Justin Peters might actually be worth a damn? I've been waiting for this balloon to pop, but the truth is that he has better numbers on the year than Khudobin has produced and it's not such a small sample size anymore. What it do?

I don't get it either. He has legitimately been pretty good. Could it be a matter of better coaching at the NHL level? I'm at a loss for other explanations.

Is there any former goalie here that can put into words what I can't in regards to Peters having the same mechanical/fundamental flaws now that he has always had? Variance, just wait till it goes in the other direction.

People fawning over Khudobin do realize he's played what amounts to one season as a backup in the NHL, right? And he's older than Peters. It's not as if he's got a proven body of work where he's been lights out either.

Yet teams are interested in trading for him, despite being injured and Peters "playing great." Keep fawning over Peters, though, it'll be interesting to see if Ward can get back to 65+ games a season.

I think there are times when a player and a system have a perfect marriage. The emphasis we have regarding limiting second opportunities really helps a goaltender who can make the first stop and struggles with loose pucks and rebounds. The defense has done a great job of limiting additional chances in front of Peters and the odd man rushes have been incredibly limited. From what I have seen, Peters is flat out bad on plays that require anticipation (breakaways, odd man chances, plays where the puck is moving quicker than players) but is strong against sustained offensive zone pressure and anything he has a clear sight line on. He's a nervous goaltender. You can watch him and see when he gets too much time to think he gets antsy back there. Having a defense in front of him that can clear pucks and block shots has been great for him.

My theory is that Peters isn't going to stop much of what he shouldn't, but will stop most everything he should. With a good defense that's a way to survive.

Oh? Have they? Got a source on that?

Also I'm pretty sure I never anything over Peters. I simply said Khudobin is pretty unproven. He's posted good numbers, sure, but if Peters gets knocked for "sample size" this year, how do you excuse Khudobin's entire NHL career to this point?

Yep, my apologies, had you confused with somebody else (which was where my fawning over Peters comment stemmed from). Fair point on the sample size, but Peters has proven to not be an NHL capable goalie. My butthole remains puckered every time he's in net facing pressure. Verdict is still out on Dobby, but by most accounts, he's considered to be a very solid backup based on his (small) body of work and overall mechanics.

And outside of Craig Custance (hahaha) and random twitter rumblings, no other sources.

The obvious problem with Peters stats, is that he hasn't been getting scored on in those "Nothing he can do about it" ways.

Great tips, weird deflections, blown coverage, etc...

He's made the saves he's supposed to make, and one or two that are a bonus. But, for whatever reason, he hasn't seen the kind of goals that every goalie gives up no matter what during this stretch.

It's a testament to how much better it seems like the team plays in front of him, and probably just a bit of a lucky streak.

The things he is in control of have looked better in most of his recent starts. But when those things he can't control go back to a more normal state, I think he's still an average backup at best.

Which is why when Khudobin comes back, we'll be glad when someone signs Peters and gets what he really is and not what he's been of late.

I forgot who said it, but it all comes down to who offers what for whom. If Peters returns a 6th round pick and Khudobin returns a legit Top 9 forward, how do you say no to that?

By the way, Bobrovsky is out 4-5 weeks. I doubt Peters makes it through waivers. And it didn't sound like they were entertaining the thought of sending Khudobin on a conditioning assignment. Muller said he might be ready as soon as Tuesday.

Teams are interested In both Khudobin and Peters. The only question is to what extent.

At the moment, Peters has both extremes. He's the more proven commotity this season since he's played well this season and Khudobin hasn't played much at all. On the other hand, his history is just ugly while Khudobin's (while shorter) looks better.

If teams are looking for a stopgap for this season while their respective goalies get healthy/bounce back, they'll probably pay for Peters, though not a lot. If teams are looking for a future goaltender, they'll probably pay for Anton, though there aren't as many teams looking for this option

I would think quite a few teams are looking for longer term solutions (Buffalo if Miller is dealt or doesn't extend, Calgary, Columbus, Edmonton, Florida, Tampa, and others) - not sure if that means Anton's stock is any higher, though?
