Well that was a pleasant surprise. Of course it has to happen when I'm traveling in VA and thus can't get the game on Gamecenter. So I was treated to Chuck's broadcast. Forgot how annoying his pronunciation of European players names was. Da-Vor-Jack? Really? And of course Rrrruutuu, as if he were a Spaniard.

Anyone think Peters can get thrown into whatever trade they have cooking for a better return?

I'm pretty sure Chuck takes pride in being 100 accurate with players names.

My mom takes great pride in being 100% accurate in pronouncing foreign food names such as "creme fraische"...it doesn't make it any less annoying.

This is certainly an odd career track. 27 years old, AHL All-Star who is awful in the big leagues.

If not for Ward AND Khudobin going down, Peters probably wasn't going to get another chance. But it happened, and he's been playing well.

Is there a comparable? Maybe a less insane version of Tim Thomas (career track wise)?

So much has gone so wrong in terms of under-performing the first quarter of the season, the possibility of things normalizing offers the faintest of hopes for good things in the future.

It seems like a lot of the big guns are tip toeing towards producing like they are supposed to produce. I expected they would in regards to Staals and Skinner, but Tlusty/Ruutu weren't necessarily going to. If they can play like they did tonight, the team might not suck again for a while until they all get hurt again.

This is why I'm extremely hesitant to blame JR and Muller. The team isn't THAT far out of playoff contention, and Staal, Semin, and J Staal (to a lesser extent) have SEVERELY underachieved. Couple that with both goalies going down...what's a coach and GM to do?

If the best players aren't the best players, there's a massive problem, one that is almost impossible to overcome. That's not a coaching or roster-creation problem, that's a player problem. Up to them to figure it out.

I'll give Rutherford a lot of credit for the moves he made this offseason (McBain and Corvo gone, Sekera, Hainsey, Gerbe, Dvorak, and Khudobin in, giving Malhotra a chance), but the core of this team is still not getting it done. The talent is there, and I know the onus is on the players to get the job done, but Rutherford is still the architect, and that can't be overlooked.

Hopefully, the top guys will start clicking like we know they can, and this team can finish in the top 3 of the Metro (not a stretch with everyone but Pittsburgh stumbling around like drunks), and all this talk about firing people and blowing up the roster can be put to rest.

The thing is, Tim Thomas' career track actually made some sense if you broke it down and looked at the details of how it all shook out.

What we're seeing with Peters makes little sense. He was a proven terrible goalie and seems to have found himself overnight. At first it was a clear case of the team covering for him, but now he's legitimately carrying his weight. I'm still not completely sold that he's even an average backup, but it's getting harder to deny that he's on more than a short term hot streak.

One of the more enjoyable games to watch last night. Canes played and skated hard, the stars played like stars, they actually had some semblance of a breakout on a regular basis, Skinner and E. Staal played a more complete game, the players all played their roles well, PP converted, PK did well against one of the better PP's in the league and Peters played well.

Other than Bellemore getting hurt, not much more I could have asked for on this one. If Bellemore is out for any extended period, I wonder if that may change JR's attempts to trade Gleason?
