Elite potential, let this guy develop for a year or two and we may see something special here.

This guy is 27. He's already well past Peak Hair.

Just checked out some of the other boards to see what everyone else was saying about this move. Pretty much universal "well hell, why weren't we in on this if that was the price". So when that's the consensus, you know we've done well.

Also ran into this on the Mtl board. Thought I'd pass along

Funny thing i just realize…...the "Cheap ass owner of the Canes" is about to spent more money than Molson for his roster.

“Dzingel, Dzangel! Top shelf from a sharp angle! And the Canes are off and running.”

- John Forslund, maybe, in an alternate universe
I can't wait for Forslund to have to call the inevitable situation where we have Svechnikov, Dzingle, Teravainen, and Kuokkanen out there for some reason and trying to get all those names right.

Hell, I hope it happens when Doc is calling a game

Great pickup. Reminds me a lot of the de Haan signing last year, only a week later.

Great value, low risk signing.

I do wonder if this means we could see Carolina walk away from an arbitration award for McGinn if he wins the arbitration. That could be where some payroll is dropped if Reimer isn't moved as mentioned earlier.

My first reaction was similar to our signing of de Haan last summer. It was exciting. We never did stuff like this before. It was great that a player wanted to be here. But did we really need the player?

But I'm more excited about Dzingel for this reason. He's a very good shooter. We saw a huge boost with Nino coming in January with chances turning into goals more often. I think Dzingel boosts that even more. There's clearly a plan to get more talented and finish more chances. Definitely exciting.

Very nice. Gotta wonder what this means about Williams though. McGinn is probably gone too.

With McGinn in arbitration, we've obviously had salary discussions with him. It's very likely, given the past 13 months, that GMBC is unexcited about giving McGinn what he thinks he's worth. This could well be a pre-emptive strike to replace him should the arbitration get ugly. I could see the GMBC walking away from a $2.5 million award for McGinn. I could even see them spitting the bit over $2 million.

The point being, the Canes are creating real competition for roster spots among third and fourth liners. If you aren't willing to fit into a salary structure that makes sense, you are completely and utterly replaceable.

Does this mean we can stop hand wringing over whether Dundon is willing to spend to compete?

Prolly not.

This could also be a signing that doesn't indicate Williams is retiring, but that the team is not interested in Williams at his asking price or term. Would anyone here want to offer Williams the Marleau contract the Leafs gave Marleau?

No, obviously. But I've seen nothing that would make me think that's the case. I think Williams has made it clear -- much to the chagrin of his agent -- that it's either retirement or Carolina. And Carolina has made it clear he has a job if he wants it. I'd be shocked if the contract became an issue, in terms of money or term.

I continue to reiterate that when we talk about McGinn, I have the impression that the importance the boy has inside the locker room is not evaluated and that he is one of those players tailored to our coach.

I'm not denying this. But if he thinks "Rod likes me" is license to write himself a blank check, he's in for a shock with this group. There's no doubt in my mind that the organization loves the way Brock plays the game, but if he's not willing to fit into the salary structure, he'll be replaced. It's that simple.

On top of that, IMO, McGinn needs us just as much as we need him. How many times do you see a guy who fills a role perfectly with one team, leave for another for more money, and he never truly fits in with the new club, unable to find the role he was so comfortable in with his previous club? If I were Brock, I'd try to understand that I provide value to Carolina that I may not provide for another club, and I'd be worried a bit about leaving for a few hundred grand (while completely understanding that a few hundred grand is a shitton of money).

So I take it we are happier with this guy than Ferland? If so, great. Wasn't expecting another pickup, but him and Haula have me feeling better about next year.

I love Ferland and all else being equal, would have preferred him on this contract. But he wasn't signing this contract, and Dzingel is a nice player. In the end, I also feel that Dzingel has a better chance of being worth the money because of his ability on the PP and his ability to stay healthy. Put it this way, he's a safer option than Ferland, but not necessarily a better one.

Can they “walk away” from McGinn if they don’t like his arbitration award?

Someone on the Trade Board replied to one of my posts about this saying there was a dollar limit ~$4M(?) on an award that could be walked away from. So potentially if McGinn gets, say $2.25M, is the team stuck with that deal?

I really like McGinn, but him on a contract that pays him upwards of $2M coupled with the cap situation we’re all unfamiliar with, would make me not like him very much...

Haula could be classified there as well. GMBC identified a need and filled it, without paying full market price.

I think it's fair to add that not only did GMBC identify a need and fill it, but they did it smartly. Instead of going all-in on one great shooter (Laine?), they got three guys at fair prices (Nino, Haula, Dzingel) to spread throughout the lineup. I'm really enjoying watching this group work.

Now it makes sense why he wanted to come here. His fiance is a pro golfer.:sarcasm:

Seriously though it says he can play all three forward positions and i know he played center. THis is great for when the inevitable injuries come and test our center depth. Now we have Haula Dzingel to fall back on before we have to throw Necas into the fire or worse Wallmark playing 2C

Looks like that's the case:
