There's somehow been .4% MORE cowardly punts? How? Did they punt in the red zone or something? And back to this punt, it was even more shitty because the Jets got the ball at like the 15 instead of inside the 5. Just failboat all around.

I'm guessing anything more cowardly would be later in the game and trailing, so such a play would be a complete surrender even if it's further away from the end zone.

I used to read the Tuesday Morning Quarterback column pretty regularly and he was always railing against punts. He would frequently bring up some prep school in Texas that spent a season never punting in any situation and ended up going like 12-2. Obviously that's an anecdote and not data but its a really interesting situation to analyze

My high school team didn't have anybody who could kick worth a damn. We would punt, but we went a whole season where I want to say we didn't even attempt a field goal beyond about the 10 yard line. The next year they found a soccer player who was willing to be a kicker in his off-season.

Point being, we always went for it on 4th down in scoring range. We suuuuuuuuuucked.

Played soccer in high school and every year there was a week during tryout season where the juniors and seniors (the guys who already knew they made the team) would go over to the football field after practice and compete to be the kicker that year.

I dunno, but this was the worst punt of 2020, apparently made worse by being a playoff game:

If you're interested in more terrible-punt stories, this video goes into obsessive detail on the topic and somehow ends up being absolutely fascinating:

Toward the end it gets into the narrow topic of pooch punting, including a strong case that this single play by Panthers legend Jon Kasay killed the pooch punt league-wide:

(start at 0:37)

And this one, which is total insanity when you look at score, time, down/distance, and the offensive players available:

Int! when the Saints finally got some positive yardage. 30 seconds at the end of the half.

I'll take it but I hate the UR with a guy with 1 foot out of bounds..
Carolina penalty to end the half.
