Because of "Jeans day." Honestly I don't think JR did all that much significantly wrong, not any more than someone like Jerry Jones and not to the point of deserving to get forced out. I think JR always cared more about the league as a whole than himself or the Panthers and when that situation happened he figured it was in the best interest of the league for him to just go quietly and not fight it. I don't think there was enough there to force him out if he was younger and wanted to fight it. But he was in his 80s and decided to just let it go. Didn't help him that one of his kids died of cancer pretty young and the other was a major f*** up, so he wasn't going to be able to pass the team down anyways.I'm afraid to ask...can someone explain why Richardson had to sell the team yet we allow rapists and murderes to still play?
I always had huge respect for JR bringing the NFL to the Carolinas but never thought he was a great owner. A couple SB appearances was nice but ultimately seemed more like one off runs than any true success. The team still has never even had back to back winning seasons which is just flat out embarrassing. Obviously I'd love to have JR back over Tepper since somehow things got significantly worse since the sale but neither is ideal. Still kinda bummed that SC billionaire whose name I forget didn't get the team -- he actually had ties to the area and was a big sports guy in general (I think his dad was a long time football coach and he played tennis or something). Tepper I don't think has ever played a sport in his life and is very clearly out of his element.
