What about a Deer Hunter?

I like Sheng, I think he does a pretty good job. I think like many journalists, they have personal relationships with the players and coaches and that can understandably make it hard to be strictly objective. He's privy to a lot more than he can actual report. I don't fault him for that, and don't want him to be Larry Brooks.
Right, to pretend that I would say half the things about Ferraro, Goodrow, or Kunin that I do on here if I had to face them every day at work, had a personal relationship with them, and depended on them to do my job would be disingenuous.

While sharing his own opinions I think at least on the podcast sheng is also sometimes slightly playing devils advocate to some degree so it's not just 2 talking heads giving ridiculously over the top hot takes while screaming the entire time

Like if the narrative is that Goodrow is worthless or Celebrini is already on track to be Crosby 2.0, he's not gonna completely shit on someone for having that take but he will give reasons to slow it down... This makes sense since he's really not a sharks fan that bleeds teal, it's his job

The JD drinking game: One beer each time he says "all that fun stuff" and one shot each time he says "player name> doing <player name> things

I'm going to make you unable to unsee something.

If you watch the YouTube videos, next time he has a guest, watch the number of times he nods his head...but for the what can never be unseen...notice how EVERY time he does, he rolls his eyes into the back of his head like a great white shark about to lay his teeth into your juicy flesh.

I hate being critical of guys who are putting themselves out there, but I think JD would make an amazing producer - he has good ideas, good guests, good episode topics… but being a good producer and a good host are two very different things and I really appreciate his podcast but it’s been definitely hard to listen to sometimes.

He needs to just spend a summer taking some radio host/acting classes so we don’t have to hear “type of situation” said 300 times in 23 minutes. It’s a skill that needs practice.

It’s actually why I miss Brodie on the after show, he’s a very likable, very easy to listen to host. But he is also very trained and it’s apparent.
That Kyle (I think was his name) was annoying, but the Locked On podcast hasn’t been the same since he left. Can’t listen to JD alone. He’s fine with another host.

Oh I found Kyle unbearable. JD is a smart guy and has good content - I agree he’s much better with a co-host. He’s had a few folks on from other Locked On podcasts and it’s usually much better.

I mean, I appreciate the podcast and his work and all, don’t want to be ungrateful to the dude.

I gave up on JD without Kyle pretty damn fast so didn’t know he has had some guest hosts on. I didn’t like Kyle as an individual, but thought they meshed well together. It’s like with Teal Town - I don’t really like AJ, but he and the guy he does The Pucknologists with I like as a duo. They are moderately entertaining even though AJ can be an ass. Jules is a decent host when she isn’t drunk. Dana is annoying as hell.

The issue is just the Locked On business plan being to find fans with day jobs that will do their shows on their spare time for cheap as opposed to having to pay real journalists/podcasters to do a real show.

They're merely spamming the quantity over quality gameplan over and over again for a crap load of teams in a crap load of sports. I wish there was one more SJHN caliber podcast out there that was more long form on a once a week cadence. I don't need daily pods for the Sharks right now while games don't really matter. I just want one more in depth podcast to supplement the one that I already listen to.

We are probably going back to once a week instead of once every other week soon. Little tough with Sheng being on the road and my schedule but we recognize that people like the weekly better

Man getting caught up on this thread is a chore at times. It’s been like 24 hours and there’s at least 2 pages of just stuff. So I have notes!

1. The more I watch this team and our prospects, we desperately need to figure out our defense. Dickinson I don’t think will ever be the guy and I think he maxes out at a second pair level which is still great but we need THE GUY. I think there’s tons of other guys in our system I could see making the NHL including LSW, Havelid, Furlong, Landen, Pohlkamp, Cagnoni but I think to expect any of those guys to be more than third pairing if they make it at all is sort of disingenuous.

2. This deadline feels like it’s going to be boring as hell. Kunin, Sturm, Ferraro as our big pieces? That’s like 3 picks all after round 3 probably. Maybe we can convince someone to give us a 2nd for Ferraro but that’s a desperate team.

3. Sheng and @Kcoyote3 are great and I look forward to their podcast every other week. Obviously there’s a preference to have it every week but considering my schedule doesn’t allow me to listen to them every week consistently, who am I to complain that they can’t record every week?!?

4. These last few losses have been disheartening as hell. It’s nice to see the young guys trying and honestly succeeding but man again this defense is trash and this goaltending is just such a question mark. It reminds me of the days of Niemi or Jones. “Sharks goaltending is like a box of chocolates. You never know which one you’re gonna get”

5. Some of yall got some major overreactions and insane ideas. No NYI does not want to move Dobson for our collection of lesser pieces. No Ekblad will not sign here for a reasonable contract. Yes 10M for Ekblad with the cap going up is not enough of an overpayment for him to sign here. Just because someone wants to improve to the team does not mean they want to mortgage the future.

6. Speaking of improving the team, Sharks need to add some vet dmen this offseason. Similar to the Walman/Ceci moves but maybe this time we get guys with positive value so they’re maybe a little better.

Thank you for volunteering to spin up the HF Boards Sharks podcast

Yep. Our D is so amazingly terrible, its hard to believe. Our clear #1 guy was a cast off that had negative value on his previous team. Great find and all, but really? Liljgren was a cast off healthy scratch. I can see why. none of the kids of thompson, thrun, or shak look great. Shak is starting to look like he belongs, but hardly shining just yet. Ferraro is capped out and clearly not it.

They need to add 2-3 top 4 Dmen, in their mid 20s, over the next year or two. I agree that Dick and the rest of the current system D cannot be counted on to be top 4 D. They might, but they might not, and even if they do, its likely at least 2-3 years before that happens at best. Another 3 years of dead last, and then having to resign smith, celly, and eklund after their ELC's is not a good recipe. They need to get some real blueliners so they can begin to be respectable and start climbing out of this hole.

This summer is another big test for grier. Once again, he has proven that he is respectable at getting rid of talent, getting some value for blackwood, grandlund, and ceci after the karlsson, meier, hertl, etc trades. But, he has yet to show himself capable of really ADDING talent. Wennberg for 5M? Kunin? Gundstrom? Dyllandrea? Kostin? Goodrow? Lindbom? Sturm? Liljgren?... He has excelled at largely overpaying for 3/4th liners or bottom pair D who couldnt get much a regular shift on their previous teams. Toffoli is the only player he has added to the organization who can actually play a top 6 role and walman is the only D who has shown a top 4 capability.

I get the idea of shedding talent to build up assets for a rebuild. But, at some point, you have to start going into talent acquisition mode? You dont mortgage the future for it, but you also cannot hope to add players off the trash heap, overpay them, and just pray that your kids will suddenly star. That is a recipe for indefinite bottom feeding and ultimately even losing your young stars 7+ years down the line as they hop ship to a much healthier and more enjoyable experience elsewhere. SJ has become a wholly unwanted desitination, and Grier has to change that.

p.s.: the sharks OT strategy is mindbogglingly dumb. Why are they so damn impatient??? In OT, when you get posession, you should NEVER give it up. even if you just play catch for 5 minutes. The whole key is patience, you speed up the ice, circle and make the other team chase you. Do that for 2 minutes but never shoot. Never force anything. Eventually, the other team will be exhausted from a 2+ minute shift running around chasing you. In the meantime, you change twice. Then you have fresh legs full of energy against an opposition that cannt move. it wont be long before you have a back door tap in. hell, even a great save is OK, because the opponent wont be able to do anything even if they get posession as they will be in full muscle failure and you will be fresh. Game after game, you see the sharks get posession in OT then try to immediately force something with somewhat low percentage. Sure, you get a shot, but then its saved and against a good team, you never touch the puck again. I am befuddled how dumb they are...
