Not if he continues to fail to produce in CAR.No, because hes getting paid regardless. Whether thats by Carolina or someone else, he is going to be one of the highest paid players in the league.
Of course. And if Carolina got the Rantanen that played in colorado that would be the case. All the "pundits" were praising this trade and how he's exactly what the Canes need. Give this guy longer than 6 games and a plague running through the team.
Not if he continues to fail to produce in CAR.
He'll definitely get paid, the real question is whether he's worth the money. 14M is a lot for someone that can't drive his own line. He'll also be 29 at the start of next year, someone will be paying huge money for his declining years.Hell get paid regardless. Hes a proven commodity and GMs also love paying players based on past performance.
He'll easily be the best UFA since Tavares and one of the best of the last 25 years. Players like him are almost never available for free.
I'll eat a hat if I'm wrong but based on the exit interviews and how it went down this seems like an incredibly unlikely option.Hope he goes UFA to the avs
I vote this be the hat:I'll eat a hat if I'm wrong but based on the exit interviews and how it went down this seems like an incredibly unlikely option.
Avs would have to pay even more than they were originally willing to or Rantanen would have to take substantially less than what he was asking for and the 8th year isn't in play. They are likely further apart than ever before.
The canes just had the flu go through the locker roomWhy he sucking right now.
I didn't like the trade. Necas is a beauty. The canes just had the flu go through the locker room
I don’t think we’ll have the money.Hope he goes UFA to the avs
Necas was gone no matter what. As a Canes fan I wish they traded him for something that wasn’t a rental but I can’t cry over Necas being traded in general as it was a foregone conclusion unfortunately. I’d prefer to just keep Necas myself, but even as a big fan of his he always struggled to fit in with the coach and how he is used.I didn't like the trade. Necas is a beauty.
Fortunately Carolina has put themselves in a position where with the cap going up they can afford to overpay a guy like Rantanen if they come to a deal.Love Rants, but if I'm looking at this objectively, I don't think he's a superstar worth nearly as much as some of the best players.
He's versatile offensively but is not the fastest player and even though he's big and strong, it always amazes me how often he's off balance. Not saying he's easy to get the puck from, but he's not Jagr-like.
If he's your best forward I don't think there's any way he's putting up a 100 pts. Yeah he stepped up whenever Nate was injured, but I think the superstars in Colorado have helped him especially in the dynamic-aspect. Being a smart player he knows how to play with those guys, and the confidence he's had to get results in that situation has been impressive.
Aho is not MacKinnon though, and the chemistry is unlikely to be as good 5-on-5 or the PP where the Avs had Makar as well.
I want this to work out and have Aho and Rants work as a dynamic duo for years to come, but I fear this is not gonna have the best outcome, whether it's the Canes moving on from him or not being able to live up to his next contract.
The thing is, McD, MacK, Drai, Matthews and even Jagr are not available.Love Rants, but if I'm looking at this objectively, I don't think he's a superstar worth nearly as much as some of the best players.

So, do you rather have Rantanen or 13+M in cap space?
If cap space, who is the player you would give the money to?
(And just a quick reminder…it‘s the money of a billionaire who makes more money with his hobby.)
The choice is not between Rantanen and a better player for less money.
It’s either Rantanen or nothing…or you sign and trade him for Pettersson or Ehlers or Zegras and/or some picks….aka a handful of maybes.
Horrid seems an exaggeration considering the success they’ve had using the system. Boring? Maybe, but winning is never really boring.Personally, I'd rather have Necas for 2 runs at 6.5m AAV and then extend him for still less than Rantanen will cost.
Brindamour and the horrendous style that Carolina uses is the problem. Boring, dull hockey that sucks the life out of creatively gifted players like Necas and Rantanen. Robots like Aho with no sizzle to their game excel in his system, not players who want to play exciting hockey and push the envelope offensively.
Necas, with the shackles taken off, is a better offense generator than Rantanen is.
Even in Carolina's horrid system, he was still a top 10 point scorer in the league before getting traded to Colorado. Rantanen would not be top 10 in the league over a full year with the Hurricanes.

I’m glad Necas is away from us though. Rantanen could fit the style better than Necas, but you have to expect less production. Hard to pay a guy what Rants wants with less production.

Let’s say he drops from a 100 point player to a point per game player, then 12.5/13 is an overpay but they have the space and core locked up long enough to weather such an overpay.

No team has consistently gotten more out of less in my memory. We lost our second pair, Guentzel and TT and we’re still in it with lesser replacements. We’ve won at least one round every year, a few times two rounds. That’s success in just about anyone’s book. The system has worked. Is it enough to win? Who knows, needs the right combo of guys. The pp and the goaltending is what’s cost us series, not the system. You’ve reached the conference finals twice in the past six years. Not even a final. That’s a lot of success?
The Avs won a Cup and don’t play boring. That seemed to work well for Rantanen.
Carolina’s style isn’t a good fit for Mikko. It’s pretty simple. It’s not a style meant for offensively gifted players. If you’re cool with that, then great.
I think the Canes management just acquired the best pieces they can and do their best to make them fit. I agree they need a 2C, and if they find one for the right price they’ll do it. They did it with Trocheck. Rantanen could be the perfect Aho linemate, it makes sense they went for him.Yeah, I'm not suggesting the Canes shouldn't try to keep him. You pick your lane, you got to go for it.
I think they need more though, like having a strong 2C (who might even end up centering him). So I guess the point was I don't think Rants is the guy alone who pushes this team over the edge, if that's what some people are expecting.
