Montreal is closer to San Jose than San Jose, so I think he will sign in Detroit.

Not surprised by this move. Carolina isn't a bad team to play for, but even if San Jose sucked major ass, he would likely still go back there for his last season.

This isn't going to be his last season.

Well that was expected. He wasn't going to play in Carolina this year.

Last year, the NHL informed Colorado and Washington that it did not like the arrangement with Orpik. This year we see Carolina and Toronto engage in essentially the same type of transaction, with the only difference being that Carolina expresses a public desire for Marleau to play for the Canes and then waits for a few days before buying him out.

Make sense, since Carolina has always had money to burn (sarcasm)

Would hate to see Carolina turn around and strip down some of the team to save money because they went under water for a few years to be competitive

Chicago knows that story all too familiar from the 90s

Lot of players need to be sign by the Sharks before Marleau is even a possibility

This isn't true. If you have an opportunity to bring in someone in a depth role for the minimum which should be the case here, it won't affect anything else.

Well it should be. Unless San Jose is going to keep bringing him back for really cheap just because.

Why should it be? It's up to Marleau to play as long as he wants and there are teams willing to bring him in. He wants to play beyond this upcoming season and likely will.
