Well, his actual contribution to what happens on the ice is far superior to that of Rask.
Let's not forget that this season is the 1st in a long time that Carolina as a team is close Minnesota Wild. Wild was really stacked with depth few years ago and i bet Rask would have looked better than in Carolina.

Nobody expects Nino to come in to Carolina and be a top scoring forward. Canes fans are happy because Victor Rask has been centering the Canes 4th line for $4 million and has looked bad doing it. Any middle-6 talent is a significant upgrade. It turned dead money into something possibly useful.

I’d almost rather have the guy who’s put in a position to fail and does over the guy who has been put in a position to succeed and still fails in this situation.

Nino is not that good... he’s one dimensional and basically a 40-45 pt guy outside of one big season... people proclaiming it as some big steal have not been tracking Ninos (or maybe Rasks) career too closely

He also has a pretty large contract, 1.25m more per year than Rask

I like it for both teams, personally... Canes need a winger who can score goals, but Rask has been nearly as productive as Nino outside of this year and he plays a position Minnesota needs now and long term. Not as ‘sexy’ of a name but that doesn’t mean Carolina is some big winner, nor is Minnesota a big loser... good hockey deal for both teams - Carolina gets more potential upside but more risk given Ninos caphit

Why has Rask had such a poor year? He seemed to be a good player

He's never been the greatest skater, but his first few years it was enough to keep up with his teammates. Canes have gradually built a faster team and now he's consistently behind the play.

Also, when he was scoring 45-50 points he was playing a blue-collar, efficient game in the middle of the ice. Kind of a quasi-PF role. But last year and so far this year he's become very much a perimeter player, and he just doesn't have the footspeed to be any good when he's not playing an efficient game.

I hope he turns it around because I've always liked him.

Seems pretty even to me, Rask still has room to improve and Nino is what he is.

Good for Carolina. I like Nino.

Maybe this will free up a center slot for Kuokkanen in Carolina or maybe they move Mäenalanen who has been impressive in the wing to the middle. Interesting to see how that plays out.

I don't see why this means the end of Ferland. Rask's contract was a sunk cost at 4mil. We were going to have to pay that money either way. We now get a huge upgrade in Nino (yes, it's huge because Rask is that bad) at only 1.25 more than what we were paying for the same amount of term. This shouldn't impact re-signing Ferland.

Ferland - Aho - TT
Svech - #2C (hopefully Necas) - Nino

It's not the best top 6 by any stretch but it isn't horrible assuming some of the players progress. They are all under 27 and in the case of Aho, Svech and Necas they are still babies in that sense.

If we trade one of the surplus RHD for another good forward piece we might actually have something here...

Value wise Minnesota won that trade but here we are years latter and Clutter is still an effective two-way forward for the island.

If by two-way you mean a 4th liner that plays 13 mins/game, scores 15-20 pts/year and earns 3,5 million/year, then yeah, sure.

One way is a lot shorter than the other, though. ;)
