It worked out pretty well for both teams. Kuznetsov was quite productive for us in the postseason, we paid a small pick for him @ 50%, and there were no cap implications in the end.

Not a hater, just my opinion. I endured all the torture Lemieux and the Penguins put us through over the years. I used to watch DC20 and HTS with Mike Fornes and Al Koken(Gordie Howe the first year) on the call, and used to go to games at the Caps Center, so save your Ovie-bandwagon fan bullshit accusation for somebody else.

The most important goal of that playoffs, and the greatest goal in Caps history, can be 2 different things. If we lose game 3 to Columbus, that would've been 3 consecutive OT losses to start a series, and we would've been down 3 games to 0 against Bob. So, it's almost a guarantee that we lose that series and the Cup doesn't happen, along with the team likely getting dismantled. Instead, we win that game, and the next 3, which absolutely catapulted us forward with momentum. The Kuzy goal was huge,(and is the greatest goal in Caps history)and I will always love the guy for that.
You have to remember, we put Holtby in halfway through game 2, and still lost in OT. When game 3 went to OT, a dread had fallen over the team again. A dread that Caps fans were used to come playoff time, a dread only a few franchises understand. There's a reason we had the "Choking Dogs" nickname in D.C for years.
The Eller goal was a lucky bounce, the type of bounce we never used to get in the playoffs. So, once that goal goes in, it's 2 games to 1, and everything is possible again. We win the next 3 games to take the series, and carry that confidence into Pittsburgh.

Didn’t mean offense by the overall caps/pens history comment. It was more of a question to you or hey do you remember which team has hurt the caps more in their existence. I was a little kid in the 80s so that’s when I started watching. I get what your saying about the Eller Columbus goal being the have to have goal but imo it still wasn’t important. Yes it had to happen but no one was giving the caps a shot at anything before the playoffs given back to back losses to the pens the prev 2 years and the perceived idea that they were worse than the previous 2 years, the coach was leaving, Holtby fell apart and so on. For me the dread your talking about was when they beat cbj and there were the penguins again. Was watching the game with 2 friends and we all so expected them to lose none of us even understood kuzy had scored the winner live when it happened. It was literally someone saying I think we won. The way in which kuzy scored also cements for me. I don’t believe I’ll ever see a defining capitals goal like that again. Cheers

No. We're pretty solid at middle-6 Cs...they're all 3Cs though. We also viewed Kuzy as a 3C.

The problem remains filling the 2C spot without having to move Jarvy or Necas there.

We lost three players of value, one of which had been very inconsistent the last few years as he became less needed (TT). Ghost and Walker are downgrades but they should fit the system well and we still had Orlov to step up.

They lost TT. TT had been inconsistent the last few years and was no longer stapled to Aho like he used to be. It was time to move on. Noesen is a fourth liner. We were one of the best teams in the NHL before we got Kuzy and Jake at the deadline, so them not staying is hardly world ending. I’d presume we made the Kuzy move knowing he wasn’t going to stay.

“Severely depleted” when we lost one top six guy feels like hyperbole. I’d love to see them add a top six or nine guy, and there’s months left in the off season but we’re still a playoff team. They seriously are more talented right now than the 2018 team that made the third round. Life will go on.

The problem is that they’re projecting that they don’t need a better center. Post season press conference where Waddell made a joke about Necas’ dad wanting him to be on the pp, he and Rod were asked about them adding to the center group. Waddell kind of scoffed at the idea of it, and said the only thing they’re trying to add is a righty center which they eventually did by adding…..Jack Roslovic. It wasn’t the first time they projected that they were fine at center and deep. The only thing that contradicts this is they traded for Kuzy which suggests they know they need more offense there, though they can make the excuse they wanted someone with playoff success.

I’m not hopeful they’re adding a legit 2C anytime soon.

Babayev shared that 15 NHL clubs were still showing interest, adding, “[Kuznetsov] just wants to play hockey and be trusted. He still has the ability to play for many years to come. Kuznetsov is in good physical shape… If there was interest in those teams that count on him and let him show his best qualities, he would also consider them.”

Pesce is off to NJ, he won’t be a Cane this season.

The biggest issue the Canes have, particularly compared to 2019, is that they can’t keep leaning on their defense to compensate for a weak/weirdly structured forward group. Pesce is gone, the massively underrated Skjei is gone, Burns is too old to remain a #1 type guy for much longer. They still have a good d group but it isn’t great like it used to be. Which means the forwards and goalies need to step up and perform consistently.

RBA wants certain things from his centers, and he really doesn’t like players who slow down the play all over the ice. We’re a high tempo team. It’s fine Kuzy slows the game down in the offensive zone but everywhere else it wasn’t a fit. Maybe that fits your team. I don’t understand where the Kk shot fits in.
