Talk about hometown discount...
Slavin just doesn't care about money, and it's not a PR bit. It's genuinely not something that drives him. He has to take something appropriate for his skill level or the NHLPA will be upset, but he's going to take what he deems sufficient for him and his family and the causes he cares about rather than chasing every dollar.

It's not an act. I have never in my life seen somebody who actually walks the walk of their faith the way Slavin does. For him, it's genuinely about faith, family, community, and team.

The Hurricanes are blessed to have someone like him.

Best contract in hockey.

900k difference between him and Pesce? Devils did well, but this is absolute highway robbery.

The fact that Skjei just got a higher deal at the same age shows how great this is compared to the UFA madness, even accounting for this being a year away and a year longer.

We’re paying him until he’s 39. This doesn’t kick in until after next season when he’s 31. Yes he plays a game that may age well but there’s pretty big risk here too. Defensive dmen don’t get big money even when they’re amazing at it. I don’t see this as the huge discount other people do.

He’s generally worth the risk though.

Ps. Not sure why anyone would think he took a discount on the first one. Francis took heat for signing him for what he got back then. RF took the chance of signing a guy young for bigger money than you thought he’d earned with longer term with the hope it would turn out a bargain as costs went up. Which it did. Teams do this all the time now, but the Slavin and Pesce contracts were both considered surprises and a risk.

This past year I've read an article on nhl.com about him and his (religious) beliefs. Suffice to say, I'm not surprised at all by this. Good man. Puts his money where his mouth is which is getting rarer by the day.

Vlasic in his prime was pretty darn good.

Slavin's reputation is aided by the advanced stats era which was in its infancy when Vlasic was one of the best in the league.

It’s more than that. Even if you set aside advanced stats, Slavin is still better than Vlasic in whatever you care to talk about. He scores a lot more, takes fewer penalties, has a better Norris record. Defense is subjective but there’s nothing to support the idea that Vlasic had a better defensive reputation.

I’m not saying the gap is huge or anything. Vlasic was a top-level defender too. But Slavin has a clear edge.

Another very good contract.

Carolina is showing how a modern franchise need to operate! Every year they sign a pretty good player to a good deal. Most other franchises have such a deal once in 10 years!

I would love to be a Carolina fan. But iam Flyers fan my whole life so iam not able to switch ;D

I will suffer from the flyers my whole life like it always was ;D
