How about that last playoff series?
Responding to the 3 on 3 comment. Pretty sure there’s none of that in the playoffs. Nice try though. Just pointing out an obvious observation from that game’s 3 on 3.

Not sure why the need to throw a dig my way. Avalanche are one of my teams. I’ve been an Avalanche fan since the 1996 with Forsberg being my all time favourite player and my daughter and I both have Makar jerseys.

They traded a 28 year old for 26 and 24 year old players, added a 2nd and a 4th, and created cap room this year and for the next 3-4 years.

Since when is a franchise winger a necessity when you already have a franchise center and franchise dman?

Based on the past?

For example Colorado, Tampa, Florida winning the Cups

What did they all have? Franchise level wingers on their rosters

West is a damm nightmare to get through and today Avs are less talented team than yesterday

A lot of people on this post are acting as if Colorado are a top 5, maybe even top 3, contender for the Stanley Cup. They are not, they may be top 10 at best. Why continue with this core as they age out?

Seems to me Rantanen's camp was asking for more money (or at least equal) to MacKinnon, which firstly is not right, and secondly severely handicaps them salary cap wise going forward. I applaud Sakic for having the balls to shake up the organization, stay cap responsible, get younger, yet still remain competitive.
This core already won a cup.

Avs are 5 points out of 4th in the NHL and 6 points out of 3rd. There are franchises that have never had a duo as good as Mack/Makar in their history let alone playing together in their primes.

With how atrocious Georgiev was, just getting stability with goaltending is enough to make them a top team. If they had literally 900 (league average) goaltending from him in his 18 games, that's probably an extra 6-10 points on AVERAGE (not good or great) goaltending alone.

Anyways, they're basically haggling over 2-3 million dollars and honestly why? You pay your superstars, especially proven ones at that. The floor for Rantanen is 11 mill considering that basically most teams in the NHL would pay him that ASAP considering that since 2020 he is 4th in the league in points and 5th in goals.

The Avs trying to save 2-3 million dollars on him isn't the major difference maker it is made out to be, especially if Makar and Mack aren't going to also take 2-3 million lesson (which Mack took the max and I'd bet Makar will also take the max)

Less talented and a lot easier to play against. Nescas is a good carrier of the puck, but he’s not hard to play against. Rantanen is the whole package. The Canes are significantly better now.

Recent history would suggest you should

They were supposed to be the next dynasty after Cup win and he managed to kill their depth. The way they’ve had to play Mack& Rantanen in the regular season they’ve had nothing left in the post season
"Managed to kill" is a pretty strong description for somebody who had to deal with his fairly young captain's probable career ending injury (Landeskog), an expansion draft (Burakovsky), a key player who disappears in the playoffs (Nicushkin) and a flat cap while winning a cup (when salaries go up team-wise across the board). That team, that year, was a wagon but they haven't had a lot of good fortune since. That isn't all on the GM.

Canes have something like 35M in expiring contracts. I just feel like it’s a bit naive to think they don’t have some kind of reassurances/comfort in that next Rantanen deal, especially considering the Guentzel fiasco last season AND still having their top prospects untouched after this deal. Rely on them more heavily if you have to.

Not sure Aho will let him leave regardless.

They made several bad moves/trades

They let Kadri walk and never replaced him, that was really that set the wheels in motion

Had to trade Byram, at a time when Avs where going to have 3 1D’s for a 2C solution that’s not working and is likely on the trade board

Newhook failure

Their goaltending solutions, Georgiev etc

Now traded their superstar winger in his prime

They had no issues paying to a goalie they had no idea how he’d do but can’t pay one of your most trusted franchise players

must be nice to be in a world where the salary cap doesn't exist.

It would be extremely surprising if he got medically cleared, it would be the greatest miracle in sports history if he came back as a decent player.
Not just coming back from a really bad knee and off the common path surgery, but he hasn’t played the game in what….2-3 years? It’s a fast game and he’s not young. Even if he made it back…. being a significant player for them?

Not seeing it.

Makar is/was always going to set the new market for Dmen

Whether or not Colorado paid Rantanen

& all of you Colorado fans don’t have certainty that he wouldn’t have signed for less than 14M. That just helps you to sleep better and cope

Starting price is always different than the final number, you should very well know none of these guys start from the number they’ll accept and Colorado didn’t go back to Rantanen just decided to trade him

So you really have no clue about the 14M being set on stone by Rantanen
Quite likely management thought so, hence...the trade

I wouldn't describe Mikko as hard to play against. Sure he's big and will occasionally rage out and go on a cross checking spree, but he makes a lot of soft/lazy plays and doesn't really move his feet.

They have more cap space still and more assets from this trade now as well. They aren't done and can make another big splash.

This is a retool. Cmac doesnt want to end up like the Blues who lost Pietroangelo for nothing. But he should have been more proactive. Begore Drai signs the 14M, he should have given Mikko a 12.5 take it or leave it deal.

Yeah. This should have been sorted out in the offseason. Undoubtedly could have gotten a much nicer return, too.
