It sounds like you needed to find a new family for your dog.Yeah I’m glad Mikko got dealt to probably my favorite team and fanbase out East. Will be pulling hard for him and the Canes. I mean, I’ll always want Rantanen to have success but if it had to be elsewhere, for me anyways….its a good spot. If he is as productive as he always is in the playoffs, he’s gonna help Carolina get over the hump.
So let me get this straight, the Hawks traded their most moveable asset at the deadline and ate $4.75M of capspace just to get their third round pick back?
What the hell are they doing there?
Apparently he was asking for around Draisatl's deal at $14 million (same agent). Friedman mentions it at the one minute mark.A lot of people on this post are acting as if Colorado are a top 5, maybe even top 3, contender for the Stanley Cup. They are not, they may be top 10 at best. Why continue with this core as they age out?
Seems to me Rantanen's camp was asking for more money (or at least equal) to MacKinnon, which firstly is not right, and secondly severely handicaps them salary cap wise going forward. I applaud Sakic for having the balls to shake up the organization, stay cap responsible, get younger, yet still remain competitive.
Even if this was the time to deal Hall, why eat the cap essentially for free?No guarantee that Hall would get positive value / be healthy at the deadline.
Think it was smart by them.
Just quoting this to bump it up in the thread. Need more people to see this. And MacKinnon probably one of the most overrated players in the league.

With the cap going up a lot the next 2 years a 13m contract is just fine. Only reason the Avs didnt do it is because of their 'internal' cap that says noone can make more than Nate.
Not the way MacKinnon was coasting on the back check Wednesday night when Pionk scored the OT winner.MacK and Necas together will be insane speeds, 3on3 MacK, Necas, Makar is going to be stupid
That's IF Landeskog comes back and is able to return to form. He hasn't played a game for over 2 years.
Avs are a worse team after this trade but they gained more depth.
Wow, that's an amazing deal for Colorado.
I don't know what Carolina is doing with this trade. Like sure, they got the best player for this year, but they gave up Necas for a rental? I know he only has one additional year, but I still think that's a valuable part of the equation.
If they re-sign Rantanen, I guess it becomes a lot more palatable, but it would seem that if you're Carolina the plan is to get a lot better and not get a little better. Yeah, Rantanen is a great player, but Necas is pretty good. That's a loss for them without a doubt.
The rest of the deal is basically just whatever. Not much important was involved.
Think Colorado made the most of a bad situation.
It’s cute that teams want to keep trying to enforce these internal caps but everybody knows the cap is expected to skyrocket in the next few years. The best players on expiring deals don’t care what the other players on the team are making right now on deals they signed in previous years. They expect their % of a rising cap and if the team won’t give it to them because player X makes salary Y then they’ll go to market and get it there. If Rantanen hits the open market, lots of teams would pay $14M for him.
If they wouldn't be they wouldn't let Necas (and a third) go for six months of Rantanen. GMs who sell out for one playoff run end up getting fired.Carolina notoriously sets their own value on players & doesn't like to move off it. Who knows if they are willing to go that high.

And if he was healthy at the deadline I’d think they could get a second for him.

A player who has screwed them twice in the playoffs and is one F*CK up away from his contract being terminated. They have a better player in Nuke making a lot less
14M in the new cap would still be a smaller cap% than what the top players are signed to now. If he gets 13M then significantly so. 11M (Avs offer) on the other hand is a joke.Whoever signs rants to the next contract will not be winning any cup with that contract, I promise.
McDavid to the Canucks in an erotic dream I had. This is the biggest trade since _____?
Halls play has not at all been deserving of a 2nd.Even if this was the time to deal Hall, why eat the cap essentially for free?
