I know it gets overlooked because the team's been so good but San Francisco and Trey Lance is another massive whiff. 3 1sts and a third.
Yeah, this one rivals Young is that the opportunity cost of Pick 12 that draft. As pretty much all of the non QBs up to Mac Jones picks have been excellent. They could have picked Slater who went to the chargers to bookend the Tackle position. Plus 2 extra firsts to help somewhere else.

For shits and giggles;

Games started by QB;

Ryan Leaf: 21 games started in 3 seasons. Drafted 1998, final game started in 2001

JaMarcus Russell: 25 games started in 3 seasons. Drafted 2007, final game started in 2009

Bryce Young: 18 games started in 2 seasons.

There's a non-zero chance Bryce's career as a started has burnt out before these guys. Incredible.

Cade McNown is another QB you could add who was out of league quickly after being high pick.

12th overall in the vaunted 99 QB Draft (Couch, McNabb, Smith, Culpepper and McNown at times were so hyped) who was a massive mistake and failure in NFL

Started just 15 games before Bears were more than willing to move on after just 2 years

Akili Smith (3rd overall) in that draft also in Cincy lasted 4 years but just 16 starts

At least from all accounts Young is not a terrible teammate

This trade was terrible and would have been if we chose Stroud.. Trading up with the Swiss cheese of a team we had with holes the size of the St. Louis Arch wasn't a good idea (TM) The Panthers Trading up was a mistake.. Bryce Young needed a team that wasn't full of turnstiles to have a chance. At this point he's broken... And he may not of have good but the Panthers Broke him.

Bad teams have holes. Often at OL. Lack of real practice hurts OL development. And how many really good OL coaches are there in the NFL?

Realistically they should've waited another year with the chance to draft Williams. At least he was the better prospect.

Niners are lucky that they've managed to make two conference championships and a Super Bowl since then, otherwise it would look a lot worse. & honestly, there was no justification for making that trade to begin with.

Their justification was that they were playing around Jimmy G's limitations but they were never going to win a Super Bowl with him.

What's crazy is that they got bailed out by their last freaking pick of that same draft.

Baker was traded and Darnold was a free agents and left. They could have banked on Corrall whom they took in round 3 in 2022 to give him a shot. They closed out 2022 with PJ Walker right? But, they didn’t have much on the team and to give up assets for a QB hurts.

With Lance and Young, a swap a picks I wouldn’t include in the trade. Lance was 2 extra first and a third. Young was Moore, Williams pick and a pair of seconds. Cause they would have used their own pick anyways in them if they were available.

Yes but Lance wasn't exactly a can't miss prospect, aside from the fact he played one season as a starter and that was in the FCS.

I was really excited about Bryce. After the last two games, he might be the worst QB I’ve ever seen play. Worse than Classsuen.

That’s with a vastly improved OL and a half decent receivers. When he regressed with an improved offense the decision was easy.

yep, and Young doesn't have the size or arm strength of say a Geno Smith to bounce around as a backup to emerge later on in his career. Guy's going to be lucky to catch on with the Saskatchewan Roughriders at this point, yet alone another NFL team.

I think this is overstating it a bit. He was a #1 overall pick, this is far from the end of the road for him. He'll get another few chances in NFL before he is heading up to CFL. If he wants to he actually has the profile/skill set kinda ideal for CFL, however his arm strength may be a concern on the bigger field up here. But if guys like Darnold, Trubisky, Mayfield, Willis, Mac Jones, etc can get second and third chances, I guarantee you Young has a few more chances before he is done in NFL. In fact I'd be surprised if Young doesn't start any more games for Carolina this year, once they hit 2-10 or so (and maybe sooner) and are eliminated I expect they go back to Young to see for sure if they need to for sure move on from him next year or if there might be a bit of upside left there. If for nothing else, they may be able to up his value from being released to worth a mid round pick for a team willing take on a reclamation project.

The thing is though, as much as his arm strength and fitting it into tight spots is a problem, his biggest issues is he’s not an accurate thrower.

You would think given his other limitations he would at least be able to put the ball where he wants it.

young's size itself should've been enough to keep carolina from taking him at #1. he's constantly having to play on his toes because he struggles to see over his o-line. then you have his lack of arm strength, poor footwork, lack of pocket awareness, etc and its mindblowing that he was even seen as a top QB prospect. guess that's what playing on a stacked bama team gets you

Truly mindblowing.. has to make some football people question what they think they know.

I don't see why the Panthers, nor any other team, would even consider him for a practice squad going forward. He has virtually nothing a team would want in a QB. Nothing .. He's a homeless man's Nathan Peterman.

Young’s problem wasn’t just his height but also how slight he is. Shorter QBs like Wilson and Kyler have some thickness to them and an athleticism (at least in Russ’s prime) that Bryce just doesn’t have. He is a true outlier and the fact the Panthers thought they’d be the ones to make that work is pretty galling.

The franchise is going to be spinning its wheels until Tepper f***s off.

Honestly, if you are going all in on a QB best to support as best you can. Should have swapped Burns for Moore in the trade to give Young a weapon. Bears did want a DE which is why they dealt for Sweat from Wash.
don’t think it changes much for young but at least you focused on the O and will aim to fix the D later.

Crazy how Carolina went from having a racists, sexist ass of an owner to an extremely incompetent one.

Kind of like how the Sabres went from a. cheapskate owner to one who's incompetent.

Tepper is such a petty little man that he probably won't sell the team out of spite. He will probably have to be pushed out like Dan Snyder.
