He's definitely better in Tort's system but he's still a player that you want on your team. Callahan plays hard, I don't worry about him.

This board exemplifies the types of sports fans I hate. Completely reactionary. You dudes are probably the same guys that called up the Michael Kay show after a Jets win and went on and on about how they were going to make the playoffs and whatnot. Win = this player's great! Loss = Gut the team/Trade the captain!

I highly doubt Cally is already 'declining' or what have you... he's probably just going through a mental slump like most players go through. Give him time and I'm sure he'll end up scoring some clutch goals and get back on his game. I saw him lay some hard hits on the forecheck against the Devils last night - something that absolutely nobody mentioned in the PGT. In fact, people had the nerve to say that he was "shying away" from physical contact. I'm sorry but just you want to believe something to support your point doesn't mean that thing is true. You guys need to realize this...

So, anyway, my vote is that we re-sign him.

I'm curious if he would be better if he got fewer minutes. Maybe at his age he can't still play that high intensity game. Maybe he needs closer to 13-15 minutes rather than 20+

If, during contract negotiations, Callahan and his agent even mention David Clarkson's contract, Sather and Gorton should just jettison him to Antarctica.

If we're going by last night's game--this is just over reaction. +2--2 assists and one of them was on the Kreider goal that got us to overtime. 5 hits. Highsticks happen sometimes. They're not necessarily mental errors. Greene made to move to the inside and Callahan turned to cut him off when Greene jumped back to the outside that's when the stick came around--it's a natural reaction.

The Rangers lost the game collectively. They were outworked by a lesser talented team who wanted the game more than they did. Callahan did not play great IMO but he was better than some others--like Nash for one. He didn't make that stupid icing play like Richards. He wasn't a non-entity like Brassard or Stepan were. If people want to argue he's not a great captain--I agree or that he hasn't played with the same energy or that he may even be playing hurt their legit arguments--but last night he was far from our biggest problem.

I think it's obvious Cally does not want to re injure his shoulder and his hoping this team can squeak into the playoffs where he can hopefully be a harder player to against.

Is it possible the shoulder hasn't healed fully? Or maybe there's something else wrong with him?

A guy like Cally isn't going to dog it during the season unless there's a damned good reason. The kid is a warrior.

Looks like he's playing to not get hurt so he doesn't miss the Olympics that looks like his priority right now

How much and how many years?

Yes, I actually did mention that Callahan was doing good things and getting involved. You see, I noticed that happening. What happens in GDTs here is that the discussion always veers off from the specific game to an all-encompassing review of the state of the union, so to speak.

Agreed. This place is ridiculous almost full time these days. It used to be that everything was doom and gloom when things were real bad, but now it seems like anything short of domination night after night after night leads to constant whining and overreaction. This thread is a great example. Cally played a pretty damn good game last night, but he makes a stupid mistake at the end and because of that he's garbage, he's a shell of himself, he should be traded or stripped of the C or whatever.

This board is at it's absolutely lowest point since I've been visiting. Every single thread is almost completely comprised of useless whining and its just getting worse. The team resigns the best player on the roster by far and people whine. Callahan plays one of his better games in a while and people whine. The team absolutely dominates Vancouver on Torts' return and people whine about Boyle getting mugged at the end. Where is any level-headed discussion of the team at all?

Edit: actually you are correct. My comment about Callahan playing pretty well was in the GDT, not the PGT.

Hello, just joined the forum hope everyone is doing well.

Anyway, I think Callahan is hurt or something else is up. But when you look at everyone else on the team, there is inconsistency up and down the line-up, including with Lundqvist who gave up 4 goals in 24 shots? Come on now. He def is not playing great but he is not awful by any means. Take out that penalty which is def careless on his part, and he had a very good game, 2 Primary assists, 2+ rating, 5 Hits.

I just think asking for a trade or not making him sign an extension is going a little too far now, because there are at least a half a dozen forwards who need to be addressed before Cally.

He has 4 points (1 G, 3 A) in the last 5 games, so his offensive game seems to be coming back. You also have to remember AV cut his offensive time down due to the injuries, and also trying to spark the 3rd line. He needs to be getting those top 2 line mins like the rest of the top 6 forwards, and since returning to the top 2 lines he has 3 points (1 G, 2 A) in 3 games.

Just have to let him get through this little slump, and 13 points in 22 games is not really far off from getting back on track to over 50 points in a season.

Do you think it's wrong to question Callahan's play since he came back from the broken finger? He had a good game yesterday, even with the bonehead play that cost us a potential point, but he has had a very bad stretch lately.

Callahan is my favorite Ranger, but if he keeps playing poorly (last night's game aside), I think twice before I resign him long term at 6M. I think it's likely an injury though. And he'll bounce back.

Not at all. I agree that his play hasn't been up to the bar he has set for himself in the past. I just don't think that saying he's washed up, or should be stripped of the C, or should be traded etc etc etc is "questioning his play" - it's overdramatic whining, and it's the same crap that gets said every time he hits a cold spell, and is then brushed under the rug when he comes back to form. On it's own, it wouldn't be so bad, and I wouldn't care much, but this pity party attitude has extended into almost every discussion of every topic. No one plays well, even when they do. Nothing is getting better, even when it is. No action the office takes is smart, even when it is. It's so old. Is this a place to discuss a hockey team or to just piss and moan about how much we hate a team that we all spend so much time following for one reason or another? You'd think we're following the Panthers or something with the attitude around here.

Most players go through slumps, even the best of the best. OV for example (obviously not a 1:1 with Callahan by any stretch, but he's a prominent example that most hockey fans witnessed go up and down regardless of what team they follow) has gone through seasons of slump, and look at him now. I likely wouldn't resign Cally for 6M either personally, but I'll wait to see what kind of contract he's looking for before I start posting about how he is or isn't worth it.

He also played well against Winnipeg, 7 SOG I believe, and a clutch goal to tie the game. He def is on and off this season, and I don't think 20 games should decide his future with the Rangers. Lundqvist likely had one of his worst games last night. So it's going around the entire locker room.

As per re-signing Cally, 5 or 6 years tops, between 5 and 5.5 million seems more than fair to me.

Once again, Callahan seems to be invisible. No hitting or anything

I'd literally trade his gutless ass for a 5th round pick at this point, just to get him off the ****ing ice.

What has he done so bad to be traded? This entire team is not performing well, so you want to ship out the Captain who has had injuries and has been fighting through it?

He is the captain and he needs to bring it every night, he hasnt. And on top of that he sucks offensively and has made alot of dumb plays

I agree he needs to bring it every night, but when the rest of the team is not, it can make him look bad very easily. Why do you think he got moved up with Nash tonight? He was making efforts and AV moved him up, because Kreider was playing like an idiot again.

Plus, 4 points in 6 games is not struggling offensively? One being a clutch goal.

Ugh, it's just frustrating because the entire team is sucking now and if I see one ray of hope it's with Callahan.

Stepan has been playing worse and he gets a pass? :shakehead
