When he signed his last contract many were predicting his play would start falling off by the end of it. Others said it was too early. Seems the former were right his play has fallen off.I can't justify giving him more than 5 for 3.5. 4 for 5

We had drury at 5 years 7 mil. Based on that I feel like retaining your own capt for 4 years at 5 mil (with comparable scoring and a raised cap) is pretty good. But much like Drury none of us see much of a tangible leadership effect out there and he doesn't seem to even be handling his own role out there. It would suck to see him leave but I feel pretty confident he's just someone's impending overpaid UFA mistake

He's been beyond dreadful recently. I find myself yelling at him more on the television these days than Boyle - and I yell at Boyle A LOT :naughty:

Wouldn't be opposed to dealing him. Have never been Callahan's biggest fan.

Dubinsky > Callahan.

I mean, Callahan is making $4.275 a year right now. He's going to be looking for a raise and a long contract. Do the Rangers really want to give Callahan 5 years at $5mil? He can't stay healthy, and he's not that good to be earning that kind of money.

Is railing your captain blasphemy?

Let him go sign in Buffalo for that kind of money.

Aside from being from western New York, why on earth would Callahan want to sign a long contract with the Sabres? That team hasn't been seriously competitive for a while, and is even further from being seriously competitive now than they have been. Why would a 28 year old free agent with no cup want to go to a team with no chance of winning one for the foreseeable future?

He's been bad for the past little while, but this isn't the first rough patch he's had. We've heard "trade him while his value is high" and "3rd liner on a good team" 1000 times, and we've seen that get shot down by his rebounds 999. He'll be back to where he was before eventually.

Callahan is not the overt spokesman and leader of the team like Messier, Yzerman, Sakic were for their teams. Guys like Lundqvist, Richards, Girardi, and Staal seem to share those responsibilities with Callahan. Wouldn't kill me to let Callahan walk if he commands too much money. Obviously, Sather/Gorton have a better vantage point than we do with regards to Callahan's intangible value. I trust their decision.

I want to keep Cally for the right price but I think he will get David Clarkson money and I do not think Sather will entertain that. He saw what happened to Drury and they are practically clones of each other.

I also do not think you'd be punting this season by Trading Cally and Girardi. Look at the Sharks. They dumped a bunch of guys last season that made people think they were punting the season and quite the opposite happend and they are a very good quick team with a nice mix of youth and speed.

Retooling while competeing is not out of the question. Cally and Girardi would both fetch quite Haul at the deadline and give us options.

AS far as a potential Captain vacancy. I think McD is the most obvious choice.

Trade callahan at the deadline. It's painfully obvious that he isn't the leader this team needs. His body is breaking down. Signing him to a longterm deal would be a huge mistake.

On a bad team Callahan is a first liner, on a ok team Callahan is a 2nd liner, on a good team Callahan is a third liner. I've never been a big cally supporter and I liked Dubi better when that was a debate but I think they are equals at this point.

I wouldn't re-sign him at his current price let alone a raise

Easily one of the worst players on the team right now

A SHELL

Shouldn't be wearing the C

I thought David Clarkson was a ****ing stupid hockey player. Cally is really giving him a run for his money.

Careless, stupid, unwarranted play from "the captain".

He should sit. He's been a disaster. I have no more excuses for my so called favorite player.

Terrible, stupid penalty.

I don't think he'll be worth the contract he gets in free agency. I like him as a player, but I don't know how much longer he's going to hold up. I'd much rather they let him walk than be the team that overpays him.

Anyone think Cally needs to be more vocal?

He has always been a lead-by-example kind of guy. Well, it really isn't working.

Perhaps it's revisionist history on my part but does anyone else think that Cally was a better player before he started wearing the C?

Anyone think it's possible his wing isn't fully healed? His shot looks off, and he's not hitting.

I've never seen him not hit. Ever. It used to be all he did.

It might be healed, but he could be afraid that he will hurt his shoulder again. Injuries are just as hard to overcome mentally as they are physically.

I can't help but doubt it's mental. Not with him. It's more likely that it's healed, but he doesn't have strength in it maybe?
