like compare yourself bw now vs 6 years ago. surroundings change, individuals change. what might have been needed out of a leader back then vs today might be different, or could have been seen as a right choice but done an underwhelming job.

You can use six years for Wheeler, PLD was one week ago and Morrissey was one year ago.

Adam Lowry is getting some votes too and this place seems to have a love hate relationship with him that alternates every year.

JoMo started playing better. Wheeler proved to have his shortcomings as a leader. He even admitted it. PLD just blindsided us.

Opinions change as situations change. Is this so hard to understand?

Exactly new information came out about PLD, maybe people shouldn’t have been so quick to anoint him our future captain and treat him like the knight in shining armor we needed to push out Wheeler and lead the jets into the promise land, after one solid season and one horrible season without even committing long term to the Jets.

OK so I'm not sure exactly why you decided to come at me with this. If you read above I - with a qualifier - would say ehlers should be nominated. I've said it previously I wouldn't give PLD captain unless he signed longterm. Again, not sure what your beef is today never did I say any of the players you named should be captain notably PLD.

Seems like lots are saying Morrissey and I agree. Weird that one year ago lots here thought Morrissey was horrible and one of the worst contracts in the league and wanted him gone.

Very recently many wanted PLD to be the captain, turns out he doesn’t plan on being here any longer than he has to be.

When Wheeler was given the captain, he was pretty unanimously thought to be the right choice around here, fast forward six years and most around here want him gone or stripped of the captaincy because he’s a horrible leader.

Boy do peoples opinions of players drastically change around here.

Opinions change with new data, and if the data change is big it can be drastic.

For my part, I was definitely one in favour of Wheeler as captain although I seem to recall the board was far from unanimous on this. I'm not afraid to admit that it seems I was dead wrong in my assessment, but like all of us I only had part of the picture (the on-ice product, not the behind-the-scenes Wheeler). It now seems however that there is so much smoke that there must be a fire.

As for PLD, again, on-ice he's appeared one of the few who GAF every night, and he has potential to be a big talent. So seemed a good choice -- we had no way of knowing that he doesn't plan on being here longer than he has to (assuming that is in fact the case, but again, there seems to be a fair but of smoke).

As for Morrissey, yeah, I guess that is fair ... personally I was never that down on him, but I also wasn't around here posting during the time period people thought he was horrible.

I'm pretty sure that there are a certain group of posters who've always been fans of Lowry. I know I have been. Others haven't been fans. Some in between.

I don't think you are right on this , the current Lady Byng winner might have alot of pull with the refs , and Ehlers seems like the type of Dude everyone would like.

Yeah, I don't care for any of those choices either. Wheeler is the only one that comes across as a leader, but unfortunately he's too much of a "my way or the highway" type. Maybe put the C on #88 for Schmidts and Giggles?

I don't think anyone's ever questioned Lowry's character or heart/effort, the real critiques involving him have been about his usage, which is about coaching, not him. Well, his stone hands/lack of offense, but it's been more of a "we'd love him as an elite 4th line centre and PK specialist."

As far as the captaincy goes, I think it's all overblown and narrative-based. Baseball has basically dropped the concept (stating there's really no need), and other sports don't really make the kind of fuss about it that we do in hockey. To me it feels like it's gotten too dramatic/too much pressure in the NHL...

In my line of work it would be based on character and who is most likely to lead by example. That said, the organization won't do it that way but just for fun I would have Lowry with the 'C', and JMo, Ehlers, and Svech with 'A's

That would be my choice. I mean Morrissey has had a good relationship with the media here. He's not afraid to stand in front of the mike, and he's not going to give you the banal answers you get from Scheifele. It just seems like a natural choice, and he's here for the long haul, so I think he'd be a key figure in integrating any new player.

Agreed, he's very articulate with the media. He also is very good at making things about the team and winning. He also doesn't make excuses either.

You add in that he plays a real strong two-way game and is an impact player and he leads by example on the ice as well.

I'm unsure what you do with the A on Scheifele. Ideally I'd want to rotate both A's but I think they are trying to repair that relationship so he keeps it full time is my guess. The other A I'd rotate between Lowry and Ehlers.

Seems far from guaranteed for me. A month ago Schiefele was “guaranteed gone” and now it looks like he’s not going anywhere. So who knows?

Seems there's a lot of pieces in the air they are juggling right now. I'd imagine they want to try and keep one of the Centers. Wheeler is likely gone though.
