I'd be less concerned about figuring out why NHLe isn't perfect, as everyone here is doing, and more concerned about why scouts who do it 352 days a year are even worse.

Everyone has the same numbers. Your scouts can tell you many things the numbers can't, by watching the games, sure, but also by interacting with teams, coaches, players, media people, and other scouts.

I know who Matvei Michkov is as a player, but a good scout can tell me something about his personality, character, leadership, and how he's regarded. A GM can watch games all by himself and see that Michkov is an elite talent, but it takes a scout to tell you he might also be an asshole or an addict or someone that likes hitting women and punting kittens. Or that he's the best leader ever and his coaches adore him and his teammates play up for him.

Context, in other words. Then it's up to the GM to weigh context against numbers to come up with that final value ranking. So maybe you end up in a situation where hell-yes you take Michkov if he falls to you but won't trade the farm to trade up for him, maybe for reasons that (at least in part) have little to do with the game.

And you know who can spot a leader? Respected ex-players. You know who's good at spotting injuries players are coping with? Respected ex-players. You know who can get a player or coach to talk with him candidly? Respected ex-players. You know who can spend a game just watching the bench and tell you with real accuracy what's working or not working with several players at once? Savvy, respected ex-players.

There's way, Way, WAY more to player evaluation than numbers, and there's a pretty specific group of people that are qualified to get you that info.

Steven Ellis (Dailyfaceoff) ranked all prospect pools:

21. Washington Capitals (C+)

Key prospects: Ryan Leonard, Andrew Cristall, Ivan Miroshnichenko

The high end is excellent: Ryan Leonard, Andrew Cristall and Ivan Miroshnichenko all look like valuable commodities. After that? The gap starts to widen. The future blueline options are lacking, and I don’t have much faith in any of the team’s goaltending options. Cristall and Miroshnichenko were both taken lower than they probably should have, which could make them both some excellent value pickups.

That feels a little fairer, at least that it's a slightly above average to average farm. But a C+ at 21 of a 32 team league seems really dumb. I'm also not sure why he ignores Iorio or Chesley. I'm not sure they're set to be stud #1 defenders, but you'd think there'd be a bump in perceived quality simply them being right handed shots. That's such a missing commodity in the league now a days.

I suspect the author of this list heavily relied on information obtained from online sources and other media outlets as opposed to actually watching all of these prospects. In fact a large chunk of the analysis seems to come from the most recent draft. I do agree with some of it but yea i think he ranked Caps much lower than they should be. We actually have a very promising group of prospects.

I'd say that's about where we belong. Maybe not enough mentioned about the guys after 1-2-3 but we're around 17-22 depending on how much you like a few of the boom or bust guys and if you value Stevenson as a potential NHLer or not.

His ranking is very similar to basically every other pool ranking that's been published so far. Highest I've seen is Yahoo at 19th.
Yea ive seen these polls crapping on the Caps. Look, all of them may very well be spot on. I dont have in depth knowledge on every team's prospect pool. What i do know is that Caps made a very solid pick this year and they also have Lappy and Miro both of whom dropped lower than they were projected due to health issues that are possibly/hopefully behind them. Maybe right now on paper Caps are in the bottom half of the league but the potential is difnitely there for some of these kids to develop into very useful peieces moving forward. Time will tell.

Last summer Caps were near the bottom of all the list, they seem to have moved up 10 spots after one draft. Which is impressive.

Neither Lapp or Miro have been tearing it up since drafted. Right now they seem like standard late 1st round picks, I don’t see the Carlson or Kuznetsov potential just yet.

And have played the Flyers some years. It's up to each club. I was looking yesterday and the Caps are one of three teams (NYI & SEA the others IINM) that don't have their rookies playing any games. It's good for team bonding I think if nothing else, though internally that can be done without it. Next year I would expect them to get back at it.
