IMO the experience the kids gain in a game like this, where they manage to keep the pace with reigning NHL champions, is more valuable longterm than a draftpick that is two or three higher than it could have been, if the kids were losing all the way.

I disagree. That 2-3 slot different can be Lias vs Elias. The penguins lost a lot early on. Didn't bother them.
