I'm hoping the opposite. Give me some 5+ year structure with a non dinosaur. Been awhile since we've had that. Tired of the recycling of the same old dinosaurs over and over. I hope he's the Ovi of Capitals coaches and is here until he's a dinosaur and has lots of success.
During the Ovi era the Caps have hired exactly 2 "dinosaurs" and one of those dinosaurs lead them to a cup. The other 6 were all on their first NHL jobs (and only one was subsequently hired elsewhere!!!)

This. We've suffered more from lack of experience than from old ideas.
Trotz also felt like a dinosaur because of his age, but we were only his second team!

I hate the "the NHL always recycles the same coaches" myth. It's both 1) empirically not true and 2) implies that people can never learn or develop or change (which funnily enough is the exact opposite of how people treat prospects)

Carbery has proven himself at this level with what he's been given. Can't evaluate his ability to have deep playoff success until he has a roster that can stack up with the other contenders in the east. 4-5 years runway on his deal seems appropriate

trotz was largely unimpressive during his tenure, in the 2018 season lots of people were calling him to be fired

he can thank braden holtby for his legacy here

I mean he won back-to-back presidents trophies and still ended up winning it all. I agree that we look back on him with rose-colored glasses and certainly got lucky during the cup run but he was still would've been a good hire even if they didn't win in 2018

If we're going to say he was lucky during 2018 (he was) then we also have to say he was unlucky in 2016 and 2017

holtby was bad in 2017 and we had a team 55.97 xgf% so you could say he was unlucky that year for sure. (i know this is a very tired topic)

Can we get a Carbs extension celebration video?

I’d like to thank Mr Leonsis - The Tedster. Did you see how he opened up his checkbook at the very end to get me this win? So clutch. *thumbs up, nodding enthusiastically*

And my agent, Bobby D Money. Yea, buddy, crunching those numbers like a champ. Putting my kids through private school. Alright… *finger guns*

And who can forget Timmy, the IT guy, over there. The backbone of the team. Can’t win these extensions without internet, right? Come on now... *slow clap*

And Betsy - the hidden MVP, makes the meanest cup of coffee in the game. Gave us the energy we needed, at the right time. Give it up for her. *big applause*

Pens were a bit better. If we beat Pens both those years, then we might have been back2back Cup winners instead.

The case for a Carlson reunion grows IMO. If it's between Andersson for seven years and Carlson for 2-4 I know which I'd prefer. The question for me is more: does Carlson want a clear PP1 role elsewhere instead when in DC he's at least going to have to compete to have any PP role at all? While I get just moving on in instances when the player isn't what they used to be, I think it's still workable enough provided they're able to manage his minutes more effectively. Also, if it's between a Philadelphia adding him or them it does stand to directly impact their ability to make the playoffs.

As-is the Metro offers a relatively soft route to qualifying. But there may well only be three Metro teams that make it given how strong the Altantic stands to be. I wouldn't want to make it too dicey relative to stacking up against PHI/PIT/NJD/CBJ/NYI. We'll see what the trade market bears but Carlson now becomes the top assist guy left in UFA.

I could easily see Carlson simply replacing Raddysh in Tampa Bay. They are a win-now team in an income-tax free state and he's at the tail-end of his career. Seems like a great fit.

I mean there have been tweets which say there's no chance at all he comes back to the Caps... so if its been tweeted it has to be true. :dunno:

You talking about Barry? I think that was more about already having a succession plan in place and thinking they would get more out of year 1 of Reirden than year 6 of Trotz. Just my opinion tho.
Also it ignores that Barry was just cooked here. He was close to being fired basically the entire year and we've always had those conspiracy theories that the 1-3-1 they employed that post-season to win the cup was not from Barry but a Todd change. Its something he'd never done here before at least.

Carlson in Tampa Bay actually makes quite a bit of sense to me.

I'd still be interested in Trouba dependant on the length he's looking for. I'm assuming he'll look to head back East and in the Metro. He'd be big for the penalty kill where I'm not sure you want Liljegren doing lots of minutes. Plus I like how he pairs with the offensive guys on the left side.

How can you be cooked if you just won the cup? He followed that up with back to back conference finals.
