Joe B had some geeky cringe sayings for a while but overall he's a master of his craft and has been for quite some time.

Locker is Locker. I thought he was brutal early on and is very clearly a massive homer, but I've gotten used to him. If he steps down it will probably be for health and family, and then I can see a guy like Oshie stepping in.

Very few of these players-turned-commentators are really good out of the gate. It can take a while for them to do more than just ad-lib and sprinkle in anecdotes.

What, you didn't love hearing "No relation" every other game?

As for Oshie, agreed, its hard to just change careers on a dime and be great at it from the start. If he works as hard at commentating as he did at playing hockey, he'll become really good soon.

I find myself speculating Oshie won’t want to be the local color commentary guy. He moved away….I think he’s only interested in a national gig where he can pick and choose his schedule a bit more than grinding 82 nights plus preseason and playoffs for one team. Right now, he’s doing spots on different national shows, espn, etc….as the local Locker replacement, he’s not doing that stuff much….

I am happy to announce that I am the new color commentator for the Washington Capitals. Be prepared to be inundated with statistics nobody wants, metaphors relating hockey to mead-making, and video game trivia!
Well, glad this thread has already been working on ways to remove the commentators from the broadcast all together.

Surprised he didn't like the west.
Come home Johnny

I don't think I could take him on the Devils or Flyers

That said. We have watched him play this Canes team maybe 50+ times and he's always slow and becomes JC420

Leafs just traded Woll to adjust their goalie situation. I wonder if Chris Patrick will find a taker for Lindgren(like a cap dump in a package trade for a top 6 forward) so Clay Stevenson can rightfully backup Thompson? If not, then I'm hoping Stevenson beats out Lindgren for the backup job, relegating Lindgren to Hershey.

Crazy that DSP only just turned 34 last week. Ate his way out of the NHL, a damn shame.

I know we like to think of obesity as a moral failing but overeating has to be one of the most difficult compulsive behaviors to overcome. Not like cigs or booze where you can just quit cold turkey.
I didn’t know he was that young. I know I will never forget his name as long as I live though. Can he be the new analyst?

With retatrutide out no one with the financial means needs to struggle with weight.

I love Joe B and Locker. Been watching them a long time and I still love the schik. I am also ready for next generation. I have no interest in JC420 coming back even though it will be painful to see him in EC and potentially Metro. I am fine with OV coming back for one more year.

I’d like to see Joe B and Locker work through OV retirement. Where i am conflicted is to whether they should cover the year after or go straight to new crew.

you can quit anything cold turkey. quitting alcohol cold turkey can straight up kill you.

the real problem is telling your brain to stfu and that you dont actually need the addiction.

I think he makes sense because he's young, diverse, a Caps legend, and needs the income of a steady long term-career bc he didn't make that much in his playing days. Being a color commentator is kind of a grueling job and guys who made a ton of money (like Oshie) probably don't want the grind.

The con with DSP is he's kind of a soft-spoken guy who isn't great on-air, but that can be learned.

Alzner is the other one who I think makes sense, and even kind of has that Locker-esque Golden Retriever energy. I could see him and Joe B yuking it up on a nightly basis (and I do think Joe B can and should stay for a while)

FWIW, Locker was 33 when he started doing color.

Rod Phillips didn’t retire with Gretzky or Messier. Mike Lange didn’t retire with Lemieux or Jagr. Mickey Redmond didn’t retire with Yzerman or Lidstrom.

This sentiment reminds me of when Phil Chenier retired in 2017 and monumental forced out Steve Buckhantz two years later. Just a rotation of randoms for awhile until they got Miller and Gooden. Not bad, but doesn’t hold a candle to what used to be.

I don’t really follow the Wizards much anymore because of how terrible they have been, but it also has something to do with the deterioration of the broadcast.

The Caps have a great thing going. Most of the legendary sportscasters don’t retire until they near age 80. Joe B has another 15-20 years in the tank. Locker had his health scare, but I don’t see how that would be related to calling games. Now that he is hopefully past that, he could do another 10 years.

What the Caps should not do is throw away a good thing because they think the grass is greener on the other side. In reality, the grass is most likely not greener. Love Oshie, DSP, Alzner as players but their on-camera charisma is non-existent. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but for me it’s like watching paint dry. Brent Johnson at least has a little bit of a presence to him, but his analysis is really surface level tbh. Alan May is definitely the best candidate for me. He is the most experienced in media and it definitely shows. I wouldn’t take him over Locker though.

Well, if you quit eating cold turkey that'll straight up kill you too. I think that's what makes it such a difficult compulsion to beat, it's the only addiction you can never be "sober" from. Imagine how hard it would be to recover from alcoholism if your body required you to have a couple beers several times a day to survive?
