I've gone back and forth, but this is the right answer to me. McTavish would be absolutely fantastic as a buy-low candidate with major upside potential, but the Caps are pretty well set at center with PLD and Strome for at least the next three years (plus Lapierre assuming he isn't part of the trade). Between Allen, Chesley, and Iorio, the Caps may be able to replace Roy (eventually), TvR, and McIlrath, but they don't have anyone close to replacing Carlson (Hutson is LHD).
Nemec may not pan out, but it would be a worthy gamble.

Nelson is the only player who I think will be traded that I have real interest in. He can play anywhere in the lineup, so he can start on the 3rd line but also substitute in the top 6 in the case of injury. I have no interest in a 3rd line player who can't easily play top 6.
I'd be hesitant to give up a 1st for him, but I'm not dead against it.

I’d probably give up the first this year instead of a recent top pick, though I’d love to see them draft Joshua Ravensbergen.

Trading Miroshnichenko or Lappy for Nelson would be like moving CMM or Protas out a few years back. Mistake.
I'd be open to Nelson as a rental (and only a rental). One of AA or Iorio, or a 1st further out (26 or 27, as we should be even better then) and Milano, or maybe a 2nd and some lesser prospect (Suzy, Sutter, Hofer). Something like that. But no special nuts.

Even if we do end up better in a year or two, our pick could be better - like 24 or so
our pick this year is looking like it is going to be 29-32, we have 2 seconds and our cupboard is filling up ... if it has to be a 1st, I say this years

The question is, would a division rival help a division rival strengthen for a cup? I don’t feel like it is even a rivalry at this point so maybe.

I don't know how anybody could view Nelson as a player worthy trading both Lapierre and Miro and then adding a pick on top of that knowing damn well he is a RENTAL option. Nelson doesn't bring literally anything this team doesn't have at the moment. He's good but there's no specific quality he takes on board that only he would have. He's big, he can score, he can defend but he's not quick, he doesn't have a gamebreaking ability, he's a 14-year NHL veteran who played only for one team and I have no idea how he would take this transition. That's just a questionable move in McPhee style if you ask me. I wouldn't touch it at all.
1st + Milano as a base on value. If you have to squeeze a later pick or Alexeeyev to get it done, phew ok. I trust our FO is well aware what they are doing.
But im not as sold on Nelson as many others are. He has been given a very good role in NYI to shine, dont think he can put those numbers with the role he would have here + having a bit of a down year as it is. And as a 33 year old I would be hesitant to give him a contract what he will likely be looking at for extension, so its a pure rental for me.
Edit. if anyone is worried about the constant creepy feeling of a certain horrible trade that haunted us for years, this is the type you should be cautious about. Nelson's actually suprisingly close to what Martin Erat was when we traded for him.
Erat was 32 with career 0,665 PPG and had just started to slowing down. Nelson is 33 with career 0,63 PPG and has maybe just started slowing down.? Obviously its not the same and failing one doesnt mean it happens again, but its still a "do not trade Mironischenko or another really good prospect for Nelson" as my initial reaction for some comments above. The trauma lives in deep.

I like the idea of bringing in McTavish or Nemec by just swapping them with our top prospects struggling to make the lineup. Like Miro/Lapierre+2nd/3rd for either would be a good trade.
Problem with getting Nemec is he will cost established players as NJD want to improve their current team and not futures.
They mostly need forwards and are deep at D which are also the reason Nemec isnt in the NHL. You could argue Miro and Lapierre would make NJD already and have room for improvement as young players with some NHL experience, but you would have to add to that.
Miro and Lapierre wouldnt get it done alone. The question is what more they would have to give: Dowd, Raddysh or something else in addition to have a chance on Nemec. From the top 6 you would probably have to make a deal centered around McM.
Anyway a trade like that wouldnt work for the Caps either as the team is playing so well this year they are not in sell mode at the TDL. If it was last year the Nemec problem was there it would be more possible to make a deal for him.

Nemec alone doesn't have the value right now to get them McMichael, let alone getting Lapierre or anybody else valuable on top of that. I wish people would just stop overpricng prospects on these boards, their worth is not even nearly in the same ballpark as fans think it is. Nemec is a player that can't make the lineup on his current team, the only reason he actually has any value is he's young and he was picked high. That's it, it's still not enough to bring a top-6 player back.
The Caps are not selling shit if they go for A caliber prospects who are frustrated with their position on their current team. That would have to be on a basis of a prospect for a prospect deal
Then a trade isnt made.
Lapierre doesnt come close to Nemec in value. Not to mention NJD isnt interested in futures they need players that are NHL ready. Nemec is a defenceman who is 2 year younger with a lot more potential and is producing better for a defenceman than Lapierre is in the AHL. Devils are deep on D and dont need to rush him to the NHL even with him playing good last year. Only reason for them to trade him is to get better and certainly not for a lesser prospect 1 for 1.

It goes both ways. Some prospects need more time like McM who is finally breaking out this year. I dont see why they would trade Nemec for Lapierre. Defencemen usually takes a litlle longer to establish themself. That would be to sell him for a quarter dollar. An older prospect who are not able to establish himself in the NHL isnt enough for Nemec. Im not saying his value is as high as it once was, but hes still young and if the Devils are gonna trade him they will want NHL players back not new prospects.
