Hypothetically,
would you guys, considering our roster and prospect situation, rather trade Mirosnichenko and Lapierre (in some form) for centerman Mason McTavish (ANA 2021 3rd OA) or Right shooting defenseman Simon Nemec (NJD 2022 2nd OA), assuming both table were on the table?
Nemec. A potential top pairing RD to replace Carlson is the biggest need for this team long-term.

I've gone back and forth, but this is the right answer to me. McTavish would be absolutely fantastic as a buy-low candidate with major upside potential, but the Caps are pretty well set at center with PLD and Strome for at least the next three years (plus Lapierre assuming he isn't part of the trade). Between Allen, Chesley, and Iorio, the Caps may be able to replace Roy (eventually), TvR, and McIlrath, but they don't have anyone close to replacing Carlson (Hutson is LHD).

Nemec may not pan out, but it would be a worthy gamble.

Nelson is the only player who I think will be traded that I have real interest in. He can play anywhere in the lineup, so he can start on the 3rd line but also substitute in the top 6 in the case of injury. I have no interest in a 3rd line player who can't easily play top 6.

I'd be hesitant to give up a 1st for him, but I'm not dead against it.

I mean do we really care what athletes support politically? We all love and support OV and he supports Russia. I figured he was just supporting America. So i went to find the text and this was his response. maybe everyone can love TJ again.

Remember when someone tweeted the math problem he was trying to help his 2nd grader with and Oshie couldn’t figure out the answer (ironically I think the answer was 74 which was his old jersey #)? Can’t say I’m surprised at this turn of events

Trading Miroshnichenko or Lappy for Nelson would be like moving CMM or Protas out a few years back. Mistake.

I'd be open to Nelson as a rental (and only a rental). One of AA or Iorio, or a 1st further out (26 or 27, as we should be even better then) and Milano, or maybe a 2nd and some lesser prospect (Suzy, Sutter, Hofer). Something like that. But no special nuts.

Even if we do end up better in a year or two, our pick could be better - like 24 or so

our pick this year is looking like it is going to be 29-32, we have 2 seconds and our cupboard is filling up ... if it has to be a 1st, I say this years

I would say the Islanders and Sabres are toast at this point. But there are a lot of teams on the bubble that will overpay.

The Nelson rental is interesting. I wonder if player and team could have a handshake deal that he would resign with NYI. Caps and NYI would have a handshake deal that we won’t extend. So we pay the price of a rental (which will be a free asset to NYI).

The question is, would a division rival help a division rival strengthen for a cup? I don’t feel like it is even a rivalry at this point so maybe.
