Uh-oh...

lol at that photo of Carbs

Lol what an editorialized title by RMNB. Who knew.

Carberry didn't say Vrana was the problem or that the "Vrana line" was the problem. He said he didn't like the fact that Sgarbossa and Miro cheated up while Vrana had the puck because both of them misread the play and that caused the goal against. So while the title makes it sound like he's blaming Vrana, the quote reads straightforward that he was blaming the other two guys, not Vrana.

I thought we were all supposed to be Cristall fans lol….
I mean, I'm a Capitals fan really, but I guess should have said stan instead of fan.

The whole discourse, at least for me, boils down to none of them have really broken away from the pack to show themselves as a clear cut above the rest and of that group Vrana is the only one with an elite skillset/some skillset the rest of the team doesn't really have; speed.

I guess by association I’m saying we all should be rooting for young draftees, no?

Agree on the speed,..but I’d suggest the skill Cristall brings is also in short supply. Let them fight it out for forward 12/13 IMO…

I still think Vrana deserves to make the team, but even if he doesn't I still love Carbery as a coach. Always seems like a good, or great, process.

Yeah, I'll trust that if he passes on Vrana it's for a good reason. He knows V is fast and can score and so on, but at this point with that kid there are a LOT of intangibles being evaluated, too. Attitude, compete level, and probably off-ice issues as well. He had to do more than just beat out the next guy in line. The off-ice stuff matters with him big-time, as does the development of prospects.

IMO, he had to be WAY better than the next guy in line to make it an easy call. Anything less and I can easily see them passing.

My interpretation was that Carbery blamed all three.

Do we have a clip of Vrana "cheating" Hes quite good and getting behind the D for breakaways and I wonder if that was his cheating. A D 1st coach will prob not like leaving covering the point to chase a breakaway.

it's on the NHL youtube 10m highlite thing, play is 5:15 left in 3rd

on this play looks like V's only 'mistake' was missing the headman pass and not being able to win the puck back

Miro and Sgarbossa are the guilty parties here...
somehow both were convinced V was going to win it back and they both flew leaving all 3 WSH fwds on the wrong side of center when puck leaves them behind to go 3v2

Thanks I was able to find it pretty quickly.
I think Vrana is in the doghouse because after he missed the breakout pass, he definitely dogged it on his back check and put in no effort.

Caps are at 48/50 contracts and will be at 49 if Cristall makes the team. You also would assume Leonard is signing at some point during the season. Just don't see what he brings as a 14F over Sgarbossa, and while it's not much there definitely is some opportunity cost to signing him just to play that role
They have plenty of time to sort out the contracts if they need a slot to sign Leonard. Between waivers and the TDL they could lose a contract pretty quickly. That’s all assuming Cristall makes the team and they sign Vrana. Cristall is going to have to really impress on his 9 game stint to stick if they choose to go that route.

I have been having a hard time getting the number of contracts as it is a different number in different places.

On Cristal, he is signed. Does it not count as a “contract” because he is eligible to slide? if so, it doesn’t become a contract until he plays 10 games. But Paraczak and lil Pro are both on contracts too, so do those not count either when slide eligible.

Lots of questions as i try to figure it out. Caps will likely want to keep some headroom for flexibility on contracts. Players on waivers must get claimed to rid their contract. If they just go down it still counts as a contract.

So i am with you… not sure i want to use a “contract” on Vrana.

I'm going off of Puckpedia which has us at 48/50 not counting the "slide" eligible contracts still in juniors which they have listed as Allen, Mateiko, Parascak, and Cristall

I'd be mildly surprised if Bear makes it through waivers. Couple of teams out there that (think they) can use him and either have space for him or can easily create space. He still has enough pedigree that some GMs will forget that he just isn't very good.

At this stage of the season, Bear should clear pretty easily. He hasn't played well since the 22-23 season and teams are flush with 6-7-8-9 D types. Plus, a lot of teams will shy away from him since you can only bury about half his cap hit.

I do believe that Caps could move the contract should they need to (50 contracts cap) at 50% retained for a minimal return (late conditional pick).

I don't see why they'd move him at 50% retained. They'd effectively get zero cap saving doing that, as I believe 50% of his salary can already be buried. They've also got nothing but Iorio in the way of good RD, I guess you could say McIlrath but meh.

I can't imagine the team wanting to keep Cristall around if they don't fully believe he can stick around all year, coubly so if it means losing a "potential" piece.

Wasn’t Waddell interested in signing Bear to the Canes before he signed with Washington? Or am I completely making that up?

Columbus needs to reach the cap floor at some point when their amnesty period is up so salary isn’t an issue there.

I meant purely to shed the contract, related to the earlier 50 contracts concern that was voiced in the thread. I agree that it would not save the Caps any significant cap space (half is 1,031,250 and you can bury 1,150,000 so the difference is 118,750).
