I keep hearing people thinking the Caps may run out the contracts with Kuzya and Mantha. How exactly would they “re-tool on the fly” if they don’t move salary this summer? I can’t see them rolling pretty much the exact same team last year. Carbery can’t turn crap into gold.
The truth is they’re likely stuck with those two shitbricks…..Kuzy really F’ed the Caps.

Hey is Connor Brown gonna play for us next year? Pretty good middle 6 addition if so. Realized i'd completely forgot about him.

He's a UFA and I haven't heard a peep from anyone about his injury rehab or the Caps intention to re-sign him. Dreadful luck for the guy on his last big UFA chance to blow out a knee like that. Probably not in their plans, but he's only 29, he could still have a decent career ending.

BMac said in a recent interview that they like Brown as a player and as a person and that they’d have conversations with his reps as it got closer to FA. Wouldn’t surprise me if both parties decided a one year was a good move — it gives the Caps a solid middle six winger and terrific penalty killer and it gives Brown a year to rebuild his value right before the salary cap goes up.

I don't really believe they'd buy Brodie out, but I do think they'd be willing to trade him. Especially since Toronto has stated they will be looking to reshape their defense.

If Washington decides to try to be competitive next year then I think he'd be a good fit in DC and unlike Hanifin who in my eyes is quite overrated, Brodie is likely going to be a bit undervalued because he wasn't great this last postseason. He isn't showing any signs of slowing down either:

(Look at that, another defenseman who was immediately at or near his peak when he entered the league in his early 20s!)

Of course if Washington decides to be less aggressive and to use next year as more of a development year for their prospects I don't think the fit is as strong because I don't see him really being more than a rental.

Brodie's a lefty but plays almost exclusively on the right side, right? Or am I mixing him up with someone else?

He has for most of his career but from looking at the lineups he played quite a bit on the left side this year for Toronto. Specifically beside Justin Holl.

It'd certainly be a point against acquiring him if he expresses a strong preference for the right side. But it seems like he plays both sides.

Our plan is to get younger, though.

So who are we dealing for him? TJ Oshie? Nicklas Backstrom?

When he was here in Calgary he was significantly better when on the right side.

I actually think when he played with Holl this season they had Holl playing the left side.

If he’s not really an LD at all then I don’t think he’s a fit. Thanks for the info!

I don’t think they should pass on a quality veteran option especially if the veteran might be a bit undervalued at the time and if they wouldn’t really be blocking any of the younger guys from showing what they have. Obviously with Brodie being a RD I no longer think he’s a good option, but if there was a similar LD available for relatively cheap I’d be interested.

I believe Dreger mentioned EDM in connection with Connor Brown on a recent Insider Trading. Stuck out as surprising to me.
Brown played with McDavid in Juniors. Fridge noted the same on 32T, though he said it wasn't a done deal. I bet BMac wants to see if they can keep him on the cheap (if he'd stay).

I'm not sure cheap is going to be an option. I wouldn't at all be surprised if Edm gave him a bit of term at 3-4 mil. Weren't they close on him a last offseason but couldn't move Pulljarvi (SP?).

I love how Connor Brown coming back from an ACL tear less than a year ago, and not having played yet, will be awesome. Yet Tom Wilson, who tore his over a year ago and came back and played 30 some off games, is injury prone and questionable whether he'll ever be himself again.

Connor Brown should go to Edmonton and they’re only signing him to a 1 year deal and then letting him cash out somewhere else after McDavid juices his point totals

Doesn't your little chart say he hit his peak last season?

You’re missing a top line C IMO.
Most likely a second line center too.

But it's ok we'll just trade other firsts and any "prospects" we have left for players who are a year out from making $8-$10M as UFAs.

I think some people forgot how sorely this team lacked a consistent bonafide good #2 center behind Backstrom for several years and it held them back. And those guys aren't cheap nor easy to find.
