I'd do 4 x $6.3M easy... more money for less term.

Hard to evaluate players based on teamwide suck. I suspect he's got at least a couple of good years left. And a front-loaded contract makes him tradeable later.
But he wants the term and the money….that’s why he’s not here any more.

(makes him tradeable and less distasteful in a buyout)….

I know but he'd also never played anywhere else before. Maybe the lesson was, f*** DC, I want the $$$! Which I wouldn't blame him for one bit. But the lesson also might be, home is where the heart is. Either way, what's best for the Caps is what matters.

And there it is.

I doubt he takes less than 5 years….fingers crossed. Resigning him after reaping that bounty would be a big brain move….

With Sandin presumably penciled in for a top 4 role next year and needing a new contract next year, are they really going to bring Orlov back and pay Fehervary a handsome raise to be on the third pairing? They already have TVR at $3 million. Assuming Fehervary does get close to $3 million, it's hard to imagine them pursuing Orlov and icing a $6 million third pairing.

I am assuming Dima would be willing to take a hometown discount and/or less years to come back here. Perfect opportunity to bring him back and then utilize Fever in a big trade for a top-six stud.

Who’s playing with Carlson? Orlov doesn’t work we know. Fever might be the best option come October, and you play the cheaper Sandin on the 3rd pair.

Also, $3 mil might be a significant overestimate.

We‘ll see I guess……trading the one D they have homegrown and developed fairly well before his 24 yr old season scares me. Better be a monster top-6 upgrade coming back…..something elite.

IIRC, the word was Mac offered him 3 years and he wanted 5. So maybe 4 is the sweet spot. If both sides are motivated... AND if they get a coach who's willing to maximize Dima, then it's a worthwhile investment. And you have a nice mix of vets and young'ns. Plus TVR is tradeable too.

Testing the waters and coming up short may motivate him to take a slight hit vs previous expectations.

Or, there may have been a wink and a nod agreement before he was even traded.

Caps' salary situation gets alot better - absent LTIR/retirements/trades - after '25. Almost $23m coming off the books when Nicky, Kuzy and Oshie contracts expire that year. (geez, I hope we're not seeing equivalent performances from those three in 23/24) Find a way to bring Dima back and pay him but don't overpay/overterm.

I think the plan was to bring him back. It was noted he wasn’t really shopped, with the Bruins they likely knew they couldn’t afford to extend him anyway. It would be great if they brought Orlov back and traded Carlson but they won’t.

It sounded like there were some blockers on the extension and BMac is typically a straight shooter.

If Ovechkin was left hand shot, Orlov would be on 9m here right now.
Absolutely NO to Taylor Hall.
GMBM is correct - our top 6 is not good. Strome is a great 2C and Kuzy doesnt know how to 1C properly. Maybe we can get John LeClair out of retirement to play on his wing with Wilson.

Do this every day until it lands on the Caps.

I don't think it's a surprise Orlov wants back, but the fit really isn't there for us at that money and the time-line doesn't fit very well for us to be his preferred destination. Let him take the UFA route and circle back if he's willing to come closer to 3-year deal.

Even then it's tough... we'd likely need to have dealt atleast 1 of Kuznetsov and Mantha first and then somehow have their replacements figured out, because bringing back Orlov means we can't really replace them with expensive forwards.

Time to get over the Backstrom dream. He's going to keep playing.

When Caps traded Dillon to make space they got 2 (two) second round picks for him.

Surely they can unload one of Jensen and TVR (both up there in age, not a lot of future potential) and get something in the process.

AA and Fever can play RD.

Fever-Carlson
Orlov-Jensen
Sandin-AA

makes much more sense than Sandin with Carlson or Jensen while simultaneously without Orlov
